Parallels between the Plague in the 16th Century and the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic

There are a number of similarities between today’s coronavirus pandemic and the plague outbreak in Eyam in the 16th Century. Our group discussed the fact that the general public’s attitudes and responses to the situation are relatively similar to how people back then were processing and reacting to being quarantined for long periods of time. However, we also touched briefly on the fact that medicine and healthcare have improved drastically since then, so this could potentially have a positive impact on the above, aforementioned response, in the sense that people feel safer in knowing that scientists are working towards an eventual vaccine (something that was not applicable back then), which could give them a better, more positive frame of mind (if we’re looking at this from the perspective of the optimist, that is.).
