DJ Club (CAS creativity activity) – Initial post (LO1: Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth)

Last week I started the first session of my new creativity activity called DJ club. I originally signed up for Dj club as my creativity for CAS because of my passion for music. I had many options on creative different activities that I could choose from but DJ club seemed most interesting to me. Ive also been a huge fan of music and Ive always been intrigued as to how professional Dj’s and artists mix beats and DJ songs. I felt that participating in this activity would not only fill in my CAS requirements but also give me the opportunity to learn how to DJ and develop a new skill.

During our first session at DJ club we were introduced into what the activity was about and what type of things we will be learning during this season. We first learned how to mix two tracks together. To do this we had to focus on timing, tempo, and staying on the beat so that the two tracks would blend smoothly together.

Looking ahead to this season I think I should use my strong communication and collaborative skills to my advantage in learning how to DJ. Since this is a new activity for me I should continue to use my skills to my advantage in learning a new activity and developing my skills within this new environment. Although I am extremely unfamiliar with Djing and how it works I should continue to stay open-minded and engaged in this activity in order to learn new skills within this activity. Overall Im looking forward to participating in this activity this year and I hope to develop a new passion of Djing.

Project week – Reflection post (LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience (PW), LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences & LO:6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance)

Project week was a great experience for me. At first, I had a bit of a pessimistic attitude going into project week as I wasn’t excited to be out in the wilderness parts of Singapore doing activities that I usually wouldn’t be comfortable doing. However, throughout my project week I started enjoying all the activities more and more as I started to build confidence in these areas that I usually wouldn’t be confident and comfortable in. During this time I was able to face many fears and push myself to go out of my comfort zone. I had to persevere and overcome many challenges through activities that were new to me. Additionally, I had to develop my organizational skills through the planning and time management process throughout this project week. Our expedition course during project week required us to manage our own time and schedule and meet our instructors at certain locations during specific allocated times. I had to be independent and well organized during this time as I had to take on the responsibility of organizing and packing specific items and materials for each expedition, waking up on time and getting myself to different locations at different times, and finding sustainable and efficient forms of transportation (taking public transportation or asking one of my parents to drive me).

During our 3 day expedition, I had to overcome many physical and mental challenges as I engaged in activities such as hiking in the jungle and in bunkers, completing navigational challenges that required us to go to certain places just by using a compass and building our own fire which required as to collect and chop wood and light a fire through the friction of the wood. All of these different activities were new to me and I had to adapt to these activities by working collaboratively with my other group members.

During project week we had to engage in activities that required as to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. Each day we had to bring our own packed lunch in recyclable containers. We had to engage in outdoor activities that didn’t include any forms of technology as we had to use our own personal skills to complete these activities. Engaging in these activities made me realize that oftentimes we use our electronic devices when we don’t actually need them and we use and waste unrecyclable material and garbage when we could just be using our containers. Furthermore, participating in this expedition during project week reminded me to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly by using recyclable materials such as food containers. Such small things like this can make a significant impact on the world and can help reduce environmental waste.

Project week – Initial post

At first, I struggled to find a project week group. My friend Miles and I had decided that we were going to work together but the rest of our friends had already made their own group amongst themselves so we had to look for 2-3 more people that we could group up with. After looking around for around a week we saw a group of 3 on the project week group document so we messaged them and asked if we can join their group and they said yes.

After we formed our group, we started to think of ideas for what we could do during project week. Unfortunately due to COVID, the school did not allow us to travel overseas for project week activities so this limited our choices for activities. As a group, we were all in agreement that we wanted to due some sort of activity that involves the outdoors. We wanted to do an physical activity that allowed us to be outside where we could be more interactive. Initially, we applied for wakeboarding but unfortunately, the school did not approve of this idea due to safety reasons. We then decided to apply for a diving activity called the Padi open water dive in Sentosa, at first the school liked our idea to go diving however after further research into our providers our school decided to decline our idea to go diving due to ethical reasons. UWC did not agree with resorts world Sentosa’s ethical views specifically on enrapturing dolphins, therefore they did not want us working with them for our project week. After looking at more options we discovered beyond expeditions, who’s an outdoor education group based in Singapore. They were offering a 3-day outdoor activity course and this perfectly fit our criteria so we decided to sign up for it.

  1. Considering our lesson on Abusive and Healthy relationships; What are some signs of an abusive relationship? What would you do if someone you know is in an abusive relationship?

Initial signs of an abusive relationship can be found in different forms of violence such as physical and verbal and sometimes even sexual. Verbal violence can occur when there are arguments or disagreements between couples. Physical violence is found when one partner is physical hurting the other partner by hitting them. And sexual violence can come from non consensual sex, forced sex, unwanted sex and sexual harassment between a couple. Usually in a abusive relationship one partner can feel worried or stressed. In an abusive relationship there often is a lack of communication between the couple and both parties are not taken into consideration.

If I was someone in a abusive relationship I would seek for help and support. I would initially try conveying my feelings to my partner and if the abuse still continues I would reach out to my family and friends to ask for their support and if that doesn’t work then I would speak to the authorities/police.

2. Consent Lesson: What were you main takeaways from the consent lesson? (the BBC video with the boy and girl at the party)

Some takeaways from the consent lesson was that there is a surprisingly  high number of women who experience sexual harassment/rape and that oftentimes men or women dont understand the true meaning of consent.

After discussing as a class and watching the tea video the main takeaway I had from this lesson was the simple fact that if someone doesn’t say yes it is a no. When it comes to sexual activity its not a case where if someone says no its a no and that if someone doesn’t verbally say yes it’s simply a no. Oftentimes we assume that someone is okay with engaging in sexual activity with you because they never say no but that is not true. If the other person doesn’t agree or show signs that they are saying yes you should not engage in any sexual activity with them no matter what.

3. Bystanders- In the ‘night out’ video with Emily; we saw a number of bystanders who did NOT intervene to help her? What factors (real or perceived) do you think prevented them from stepping in?

I think some of the bystanders didn’t want to intervene because they didn’t want to get involved with any drama or conflict. Although it is important for them to intervene and make sure that everyone is okay I think the reason why they didn’t intervene was mainly because they could have been afraid of starting any conflict or arguments. Other reasons why the bystanders may not have stepped in could have been because they didn’t want to involve themselves in something that is ‘not their business’, these bystanders could have been worried about getting into other peoples business and bothering them.

Although some of these factors for not stepping in may be understandable I do think It is important to not be a bystander and to step in and make sure everything is okay when a situation like this happens.

What audience does the New York times reach?

What audience does the New York times reach?

Despite the fact that 32% of the New York times audience is under the age of 32 It still seems that the New York times is mostly read by people above the age of 30. This could be because older people use social media less and  maybe have more time on their hands. Nowadays a lot of teenagers and people in their 20s tend to read  about the news or find out about certain news through social media and browsing online. I would assume that older people like to be more traditional and read the paper rather than surf the internet or go on social media. Maybe the New York times is more popular amongst elder people because they have more free time and they are less busy. If you are successful enough people above the age of 50 or 60 tend to retire and stop working. Reading the news may be more popular for people who are retired because they have more free time to read the news.

My thoughts on Chuck Close

My thoughts on Chuck Close

Im fascinated with the way Chuck close showcases his art. Although he has facial blindness most of his best artwork has been his self portraits and portraits of others. I know that he struggled in school ad that his disabilities let him down at times but I wonder if his disabilities helped him with his artwork. Would his artwork really be the same if he didn’t have these disabilities? And this made me think, for anyone that has disabilities can you use your disabilities to an advantage? Is there a way to use your disabilities in a creative way?

Chuck close has been making art for several decades and Im curious to know how he found his craft and how he found his own “type” of art.  Did Chuck Close find his inspiration from other artists?
