The father of Saba is who I think challenges most peoples thinking the most as he believes that he did the right things by attempting to kill Saba. Growing up in our western world we don’t really think that way, even if people believe they have been disrespected they usually don’t go to such extreme lengths, but I believe that is because of the different culture in Pakistan. He says in the video that she disrespected his honour, by marrying someone poorer than her, and for that, she must be killed. Later he says he had to use her as an example to her sisters and that they would not do the same, now people see him as a respectable and honourable man and his other daughters have gotten proposals because of that.
The criminal investigation was an interesting perspective as he was apart of the law and abides by the law that you can forgive people even involving honour crimes. However, he said that he thought what happened to her was awful and that it shouldn’t have happened and it is inferred that he believes that they should be in jail longer as he believes that they will just come out of jail after 5 years and kill her then for not forgiving them.
I think how you connected the western world was a really valid point, as I hadn’t thought of it that way. I understand that in Pakistan this is the custom to ‘restore honor’ to families but comparing it to the western world where you would be prosecuted for murder it is very differernt. The criminal invistigator had an interesting perspective. It seemed like he was very opposed to the honor killings however he also respected the laws that deal with honor killings. Have you considered how the governement/law might change with their approach to dealing with these honor killings in the future?
