For the first semester of grade 12 I have joined a theatre production called ‘Antigone’. I have been selected for the role of the narrator and have been learning lines regularly to be better prepared for rehearsals. Initially I began attending rehearsals remotely since I was in India. Although I have a big role in terms of the amount of scenes I appear in, it was difficult to stay as involved as I could have in person. I could not help too much with the blocking of scenes in terms of physicality. I took the initiative to involve myself in giving ideas to block particular ensemble scenes.

Through this approach, it became less difficult to engage with blocking remotely as I used the internet to my advantage. I looked for pictures of ensembles on Pinterest and videos of movement sequences on Youtube that helped the in-person cast block their scenes. I tried to involve myself in this way by staying on screen and interacting with the cast- giving them ideas verbally. The situation helped me understand the value of collaboration and communication. If there were any rehearsals that I could not attend, I took the initiative to ask a cast member what was discussed and what I should keep prepared for the next time.

Initially, I thought it would be challenging to build a dynamic with the ensemble remotely. However, I was able to interact with most of the cast members before I attended rehearsals in person. The actors took turns using their laptops to have me attend rehearsals remotely and this gave me the opportunity to build a rapport with several members. When I finally joined in person, I felt instantly involved and engaged; I understood the importance of collaboration and support. Hence, adjusting from remote to in-person was not as difficult as I assumed it would be.
