Language Identity

The journalist in the article we read about, doesn’t like forced language assimilation, she thinks it’s limiting her culture. At first, she was embarrassed to be Latino and always tried to hide it, but later her views changed. The articled talks about the fact that your accent creates your identity and it gives you strength and recognition about your culture. It shows who you are and even though it may create stereotypes and cause people to treat you differently, you should always be proud of it and not try to change it just to fit in.

I agree with her because no-one should be forced to change the way the speak and their culture and origins just to make others feel more comfortable, they should accept them they way they are. I mean, would you like it if someone told you that you were speaking the wrong way and you had to change your accent if you wanted to be accepted? Some people would try to change immediately, but that’s like changing your identity and your origin so is that the best thing to do?
