Angeline Yap interview reflection

I felt that the conversation we had as a class was extremely fun and informative. After spending so much time studying the works of Wislava Szymborska and Carol Ann Duffy on war, it was great to get a stronger and more personal look at how a poet would go about writing about war. What I found to be incredible was how she likes to describe herself as a journal, rather than a poet who takes commission for her work. It was clear this extremely relaxed approach to writing permeated her entire attitude towards poetry, as she never took very strong stances on her identity as a “woman writer”, she claims she’s instead just a writer who is a woman. I think that this allows her to be much more creatively and emotionally free in how she writes. Its clear that in her works she is able to explore the vast nuances of humanity that aren’t relegated to just the discussion of sexism, due to her not being bound by the cause of a single identity trait. I love how by using this approach she can instead identify with her work directly instead of having to identify with a cause or two that filter and deprive the writings of her uniqueness.
