EE initial reflection

Since a young age I have had an interest in the methods of trial used on suspected witches in the early modern ages, and as such decided to carry this interest forward by studying the causes of the Salem witch trials. My research thus far has helped to change my views: while initially I believed that socioeconomic problems had been the most influential cause of the trials, I have now gained a deeper understanding of the role of Puritan ideology and of individuals who catalysed the trials. My research question has also evolved: whereas previously it was centred around “what” caused the trials, it now asks “why” the trials occurred, allowing a more analytical essay rather than a descriptive account. Moving forward, I will further investigate the influence of Puritanism on other long-term factors such as social and political instability. I will do this by analysing sources such as court transcripts and historical accounts from the time of the trials.

  1. Hi Florence,
    Thanks for your reflection.
It’s interesting to see how your thinking has evolved as a result of doing some research. It’s such a fascinating topic and I’m happy to see that you are so invested in it. For next time, please remember to include your word count at the end of your paragraph.
Do let me or your supervisor know if we can help!

Good luck on the rest of your EE journey!
