Blues is a music genre which was originated in the South of the United States around the 1860s by African-Americans from roots in African musical traditions. The blues was still slowly emerging from Texas, Louisiana, the Piedmont region, and the Mississippi Delta; songs from this genre come from African American slaves that were sung during labour or field hollers. Instruments used for this music genre are pretty standard, using guitars, pianos and/or harmonicas instead of using futuristic-sounding machinery that adds layers to people’s music, mainly used in the 21st century. I find that songs back then have more meaning compared to music nowadays, such as songs in the early 20th century had music that inspired and motivated people to push forward and be resilient, whereas songs in the early 21st century seem to contain less meaning. This music genre is very significant to African Americans because these songs relate to periods where slavery was found in every country around the globe and can be used to remember the times that some of their ancestors may have experienced during those challenging times.
