The Culturama show was on the 4th of October and it was an amazing experience. After the audition for a spot for Cambodia in the show and the audition for the dancers, we got a team for the Cambodia Culturama. I realised that the leadership role that I took have a lot of responsibilities and expectations because Culturama is one of many big shows in our school. By carrying the role of the dance leader, there are many things that need to be done in a short period of time. Among all the challenges, choreograph the dances was the biggest challenge as both the dance leader and I are not professional dancers. Moreover, we need to create a dance that is new, easy to follow/teach, culturally appropriate and fun at the same time. Another challenge that we faced was also the process of cutting the music. Both of us also do not have any experience working with music especially editing one. As our music is showing the changes in the dances from a traditional dance to a festive dance and to the modern dance, so, the music needs to be smooth during the transition.

Through the experience of being a dance leader, I learned about the importance of collaboration because I would not able to run through the whole process by myself without the help of the other dance leader and the member of the Cambodia Culturama members. I also discovered a new side of me being impatient and discouraged because as there were many things going on at the same time as the Culturama process. Furthermore, the dance leader and I did not have a lot of free time even during the weekends, so, we did not get the chances to discuss often at the start of our process of working together.

A thing that I think we did really well during the process is the flexibility of our teamwork, for example, our costumes were limited for the festive groups because we did not think thoroughly about the size and the limitation of getting the costumes in Singapore. Fortunately, we change the shirt to a normal white blouse which still fit with the culture and the theme and we also got the others costumes in time.

Overall, the experience was amazing, I was satisfied with the final results. More than that, I also discovered a new interest that I never noticed when I was in Cambodia, I really enjoy dancing, editing music, and be creative. I also get to meet new people, learn about other country’s culture and not just Cambodia, understand how leadership works better and more important of all, I learned that by respecting others’ ideas, work together and do not give up will always create an amazing result.
