EE: Outline (DRAFT 1)

Subject: Environmental Systems and Societies

Tentative question: Does the economic and cultural significance of Diwali celebrations outweigh its environmental impact?

Where is my EE set? What relevant background to I need about this place to set the scene? New Delhi, India

  • An understanding of what the Diwali holiday is
    • Its significance religiously
    • Its significance environmentally
    • Its significance economically
What theories from class will inform my thinking on this topic? (Theoretical context) Atmospheric systems and societies

  • TOPIC 6.3: PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG
Why is this topic important to me? I decided to choose this subject because ESS is my favorite subject and I am keen on studying environment economics/science in the future. I chose this topic in particular because I grew up in New Delhi and I typically go back to visit a lot. I even go sometime of Diwali itself. So I have seen and know my friends and family are impacted first hand by the pollution, so I want to see if there are any viable solutions. I also want to explore the effect on the biodiversity, a part that is typically overlooked.
Why would anyone else care about this topic? Why does it matter? People who have an interest in this issue:

  • Indian Environmental Society (IES), a non-profit development organization, has been promoting Environmental Improvement Initiatives in India since 1972
  • Hindus, people of the religious group Hinduism who celebrate the diwali holiday
  • The Indian government
    • Evaluating the wellbeing of their people in terms of wellbeing
      • From celebrations
      • From environmental conditions
    • The environment
What data do I need to be able to answer my research question?
Am I doing primary data collection? How, and when?

As it is hard to quantify the satisfaction that is derived from celebrating a festival so I will conduct surveys. I will do this across religions if possible and across ages. However, I am unsure if the relevance extends across nationalities, ie should I only interview Indians since they are the stakeholders?

Otherwise I will be using secondary data.

What secondary sources will I use? I have collected research from various educational institutes and scientists from specific universities (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Papiya Mandal, Mamta Prakash, J. K. Bassin) across India, while the Indian government also releases data (Delhi Gov), scientists tend to be more reliable as there is not ulterior motive/conflict of interest in presenting false data. Additionally,  many news channels (BBC, BBC, Independant, Guardian, NYTIMES) have documented the impact on individuals and their health and lifestyle through interviews and surveys. Moreover, many research institutions have carried out the Moreover, I can conduct some personal surveys for the effect of the pollution on real people.
What will be my approach to answering my question? Working on it!
