Final Reflection (RC3)

The extended essay has provided me with an invaluable understanding of two art movements but has also allowed me to absorb the skills needed to write an independent research paper. Due to insufficient sources explicitly showing links between my chosen art movements, I was able to initiate my own research and formulate arguments based on observations made. Although I was limited to Henry Fuseli, it gave me the chance to conduct primary research by visiting a museum and speaking to a guide about the artist’s pieces. Despite the huge time-gap between both movements, I learned that, naturally, some aspects and characteristics will develop in subsequent movements. Being able to make several links backed up with concrete research plays a large part in feeling successful about the outcome of the extended essay. The fact that most of the process was self-initiated made this experience very rewarding. The most memorable part would be seeing Fuseli’s artwork in the flesh and experiencing the intimacy the artist creates using illumination. Looking back, I was left with unanswered questions regarding the development of psychology and how this might have related to Fuseli’s work and the appearance of supernatural themes in art.
