CREST Project reflection 1

For this project, I have decided to make a presentation on Genetically Modified Organisms in agriculture. I did this topic as biology and the possible ways shifts in science can change how our world works fascinates me and the GMOs in agriculture topic is both. I am fascinated by the possible outcomes it may create and truly believe that GMOs are going to help to shape a better future for everyone. I chose to do a communication project about this complex topic since it is still a relatively new piece of scientific technology that some have heard but few truly understand, this presentation will be more verbal and full of facts and statistics rather than opinions in order to be as accurate as possible while being engaging as well.

My next step is gathering research. I have found many different sources of information from many reliable sources depicting different aspects of GMOs in agriculture, such as the WHO and Harvard university reports. After I gather my information I will arrange it into a suitable order e.g. pros, cons, history, how it works etc. There will be some challenges along the way which just means I will have to overcome these challenges in order to achieve my final product.

How has your thinking on this project been influenced by other people?

The comments left by those in my group about my basic planning slides, helped me to think about areas in my project that I hadn’t thought about and to clarify them. I believe that having different perspectives is very important in any type of project, even more so on a communication report which is what the format of my project will be.

Soul

Soul is a short book I wrote for an assignment for English and Digital perspectives. The book is a collection of vignettes I wrote about my life, the format took inspiration off of Sandra Cisneros’ book “The House On Mango Street” which is written in vignette form too. The link to the book is below:

World Of Theater Traditions

In drama we are in the world of theater traditions topic, we have explored different cultures (only in south east Asia and the continent of Africa). There were 3 main subtopics, theater with only ourselves, theater with masks and theater with puppets.

theater with masks isn’t typically a new experience for me as I am familiar with them, however the masks that we used during drama were from a completely different. At first they were made of rubber and were plain in color, with a common theme of dystopia throughout all of these masks. However, we then switched to balinese masks which were very colorful and were made out of a special type of wood that the Indonesians have a ceremony to respect the gods.

Then we moved on to the topic of puppetry, in which we started off using paper puppets which we made ourselves from paper and tape. We used these puppets to create a person using the three main elements: weight, breath and focus. We also had a workshop to help familiarize us with Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry, in which we learned about the puppeteers (the dalang), the puppets, traditions and shadow puppetry stories. To add to that we saw how the puppets are used on the set of “the lion king” which were very complex and looked very realistic. There are also helmet masks which were inspired by the Maasai tribe in Southern Kenya, which were very colorful and vibrant.

Mandala essay Review

For our first Global Perspectives assignment we created a personal mandala and wrote an essay to explain how we made it our own. This was the very first time I had heard of a mandala and was curious to know how it worked, so I did my research so get an idea of what a mandala was and what it consisted of. I believe that my mandala essay went well (considering it was my first time) and that overall I completed it to a high level.

Goals:

To fully justify my perspective on my identity and fully explain the reasoning behind my symbols, what aspect of my identity do they represent and what factors may affect it. Also to use more complex vocabulary that can relate more to that part of my identity. I also want to work on improving my reasoning and evidence providing.

Action:

I will take more time and pay more attention and detail to the evidence and reasoning I provide. Also I will relate more to my identity more.

Indicators:

To indicate my progress, I will see on the next assignments to come and see the progress I have had and use it as an indicator.

Why media is not a new idea

Media or mass communication is an idea that has been around for centuries, whether it’s through books or letters, media has always had an influence on society. There are many historical passages that show that mass media has previously existed, one example of this is the bible as it is probably one of (if not the most) spread piece of text ever, which was passed on through books and people spreading awareness. Media is sometimes misinterpreted as being a recent idea that came as the internet was created, this statement is not far off from the truth. No, the internet didn’t create media but it did change the way media can be distributed as books or fax didn’t need to be used anymore as it all is online and that people didn’t need to wait for the information to come to them as it was already there as soon as it is put up. This was the start of a new era in media, Digital Media.
