The journalist really feels that being a immigrant and speaking a different language that is not english really gives you power of being different. She believes that everybody doesn’t need to know how to english. Especially when they are working so hard for their family and the country they live in. She believes that forced assimilation is bad and that people should have their own choice to do what they want and not be forced.
With journalist’s own language he mom speaks Spanish, but growing up in America she didn’t want to speak Spanish and wanted to be like a normal American and speak english, but when she grew up and saw how her mom was talking to everybody normally in spanish and not in english even though she is a citizen. She saw its about the language you speak its about the people around you and who you speak to.
