In my cover idea, I was inspired by first the idea of a Victorian portrait, the victorian side profile portrait was very popular during its time and to incorporate this style to represent Wilde’s time period and the time period of the play helped set a base for the cover. Then I wanted to incorporate the idea of the city and countryside in England by layering them within the portrait, this gives the reader a slight glimpse into what the story will be about. Furthermore, I wanted to draw two linked engagement rings at the bottom of the cover, this not only adds to the visual aesthetic but also helps allude to the very big theme of marriage in the play. Overall, I wished to incorporate historical ideas to help give the reader an insight into the play’s time period as well as incorporating some of the play’s events, places and themes (countryside, city and marriage.) Overall, I am quite pleased with the outcome of the cover I created and believe it offers enough insight into the play without making it too obvious.
