We were comparing Sappho and Alison Bechdel’s memoir in class the other day. I think it’s fascinating how both texts are both so alike yet so different. For one, in both texts, there was that explicit sensuality and theme of love and conflict which were both expressed in very contrasting but interesting ways. Alison expresses her hardships in very explicit manners and doesn’t hide her thoughts from the readers whilst Sappho’s way of evoking her pain is far more poetic and relies on the theme of nature to show loves natural and organic influence. Both creators really touch upon the global issue of identity, they both explore lovers who had to part ways, and both through an internal point of view. Here below are some comparisons I drew up:
