First Session Dance and Zumba at Hougang Care Center

LO3-Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The CAS stages of investigation and preparation have already been carried out prior to our meeting with the Hougang Care Center. Because we are working with them to prepare dance lessons for them, we needed to take a lot into consideration. Being people who are of a specific demographic within Singapore and who we know have certain disabilities that may hinder their ability to perform in certain ways, we needed to find out how best to cater our plans to fit their needs. To achieve this, we carried out our investigations and used the internet as well as direct communication with the stakeholders to find out about aspects such as their fitness and stamina as well as where their interests peaked. This helped us in being able to plan activities that they loved and enjoyed. The preparation aspect involved increased levels of working collaboratively within our group of students as part of this service. The preparation aspect entailed delegating roles and responsibilities of which I was assigned the logistics role. This has made me take on tasks such as suggesting creative ideas using facilities and things that we have around the school. Procurement of items is also something that I have taken on. This can show building from previous CAS experiences, for example MUN where I also take on the role of logistics and am aware of the process needed to procure items through the school. Though we do reflect through 15 minutes allotted at the end of the service sessions, these reflections (through this portfolio and on CAS) are ongoing.

Now we have started to carry out the plan and because of our in depth investigation and preparation preceding the first session we were able to have a successful first session that made us increasingly aware of what we need to ameliorate and keep the same from this session.
