EE Reflective Conversation 1

Edit for word count:

I decided to do an English EE because I am intrigued by how propaganda can be crafted to promote the image of people or brands. My greatest challenge was narrowing down my research topic, initially, I wanted to look at how brands portray themselves to teenagers. After the conversation, I would now focus on advertisements for a certain brand or product type, and not ‘teenagers’ as a target audience which is too vague. Another key takeaway is that I should find advertisements with rich stylistic/linguistic features for analysis. I will be looking into a Innocent Drinks’s advertising campaign. Several articles online mention Innocent’s brand voice, my supervisor brought it up, and I could still remember my own shock when I first saw its website in grade 9. (I expected to see something more professional) It seems there’s something unique in Innocent’s brand voice that makes it a trend-setter for brands, making it a valuable target for analysing.

I decided to do an English EE because I am intrigued by how propaganda can be crafted to promote the image of people or brands. My greatest challenge was narrowing down my research topic, initially, I wanted to look at how brands portray themselves to teenagers. During the reflective conversation, my supervisor gave me some advice on topic refinement; I would now focus on advertisements for a certain brand or product type, and not ‘teenagers’ as a target audience because that is too vague. Another key takeaway is that I should find advertisements with rich stylistic/linguistic features for analysis. Previously, I reached research dead ends trying to find case studies on ‘brand image’ or ‘attracting customers’ – I now know I’ll be better off finding great texts and improving my understanding of linguistic concepts and finding key examples to analyze. I’m considering doing some self-studying on visual texts. My supervisor brought the topic up for its relevancy to advertising, but we won’t be studying it until next year. After thinking through my research, perhaps I could look into the brand voice of Innocent smoothies. Several articles I looked at mentioned Innocent’s brand voice, my supervisor brought it up, and I could still remember my own shock when I first saw its website in grade 9. (I expected to see something more professional) It seems there’s something unique in Innocent’s brand voice that makes it a trend-setter for brands, making it a valuable target for analysing.

GC: Milk Tea

Thanks to Anumita and Jean, who isn’t in the GC, for helping with the GC milk tea test making!

I bought all the ingredients over the weekend, and I did feel tempted to make it myself – luckily, I didn’t do that as it would have just wasted a bunch of tea leaves. As it turns out, milk + tea doesn’t = milk tea, as Jean’s suggestion during the test make showed.

LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process : I learnt to make milk tea!!! Never thought it would be difficult to make it drinkable!
