GC Milk Tea: 23/5/19

Hello portfolio, I just tasted too many teaspoons of milk tea and I do not think I’ll want to drink milk tea for the next week. Today Anumita and I made 4 liters of milk tea, for tomorrows taste testing. At first it was too bland – the tea looked dark so we stopped adding tea leaves, even though we knew from the previous trial that we needed twice as many tea leaves as the Lipton packaging suggests we use. After she left, I poured the filtered tea back into the pot, added 10 teaspoons and reboiled. It tastes better now. Thankfully. A dash of full cream milk makes it perfect. But my tongue is still dead from the too-bland tea.

One thing that did not go too well was that many GC members forgot to show up, and we waited in the boarding house lobby for a while, because we need boarders to sign us in to access the kitchen. Somehow, I don’t feel the need to complain anymore; at a point, fewer people could actually increase productivity. We ended up making the milk tea at my house.

Another thing that didn’t go too well was that our original milk went bad, (it was stored in a tin can, we did not bother to re-container it – put it in another container – so the can kind of flaked off into the milk…) and I had to go to a nearby supermarket to buy a new can. 10 minutes, to and from Fairprice, includes time to buy the milk. At least I got cardio exercise. At first I wanted to finish making the tea by 4:30, so I can store it in the language department, but that ended up not being possible. Ugh, I thought the challenge of making tea was over and I’m experienced!

Apex Harmony Lodge Reflection

This Monday, I missed service because I had a cold.

At some point, I felt conflicted about whether I should go, since it would be looked upon badly by peers in this service-orientated school shall they miss service because of something as minor and trivial as a cold. Then again, it would be unethical so spread germs in an old peoples’ home. So I chose not to go.

To be honest, that wasn’t the only reason. Last season, I was paired with an old lady from Hong Kong – From her, I found out what my hometown was like some decades ago, and we spoke Cantonese. Perhaps the similar language we spoke made me feel closer to her, I would find her company more pleasant than some people my age. But then this season, they partnered me up with another person. Service used to be tiring (getting on a bus and going out after school is tiring no matter if I’m doing service or not) but rewarding. Now, I don’t get that social satisfaction. I try to be curious and I am naturally curious but then curiosity stops at a point when the questions you ask get answers that don’t make sense.

Then again, this is service, and its about them and not me. So I will smile and get over it, hopefully actually making my current partner’s day brighter.

EE Day Exit Ticket

One thing I’ve learned: I learned the difference between ‘quoting’ and ‘citing’. Citing refers to crediting others for their helpful ideas/theories that I’ve built my argument upon. Quoting, on the other hand, refers to repeating another person’s words, which may not necessarily mean I have relied on them for the development of my ideas. I can quote anyone to present their opinions, but I should only cite people who are credible.

What I’m proud of: I’m most proud of my time management today. I managed to stay on track when I am supposed to while not ending up being that workaholic person that ditches their friends. I completed a decent amount of research, consolidated my understanding of what I need to do, and also enjoyed the snacks we received to power us through EE day. (The hot chocolate is really good)

What I’ll be doing next: I will need to type up another 700 words for our first deadline and find a collection of Innocent (smoothies) advertisements for my analysis. I could also take a look at adverts by Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to compare and contrast with Innocent advertisements since Ben & Jerry’s is also selling food promoted as a good and natural option.
