MIND’s Reflection

Learning Objective 6

So far during this service, we have learnt about all the possible disabilities that our clients might have and how we can support them and not provoke them when socialising with them. Knowing about this is significant not only for this service but for life in general, as it is can help improve social interactions between intellectually challenged and the rest of society. The issue is quite important as people with such disabilities are often alienated from their communities, which normally result in miss treatment, though if knowledgable enough to understand and interact with a person with disabilities, people will be able to accept them as a part of their society improving their lifestyle as well as theirs.

To be honest, spending so many years in this school I have personally spent time with a range of service partners who interact with such people. After some exposure to people with such disabilities, my thinking has changed over the years to be fewer actions of pity and more engaging and thoughtful to help them by making their experiences friendlier. Something I would like to learn is how I can help when not with them if it’s by spreading awareness on the treatment and how to interact with such people or collaborating and contributing in some shape or form.
