Child Soldiers

Child soldiers violates the rights to liberty, education and the right to standard of living. Examples of this can be found in the Middle East, children being persuaded by Islamic State propaganda to fight. Child soldiers can occur when children living in war zones are are influenced or persuaded to fight for a cause that they are unaware of, all due to being young and vulnerable and not being educated on the matter. These rights are protected by the United Nations and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Child soldiers could be prevented by not allowing wars around civilian population and educate people about child soldiers.

A Girl in the River

The government believes that Islam allows you to do whatever you want to do, no matter if you are a man of woman. Therefore meaning that Saba had the right do what ever she wanted and when she wanted to get married to Qaiser a man of a lower status then her. This made me confused as the reason why the father and uncle tried to kill Saba in the first place was because she brought dishonour to the family but the decision to get married was up to her. Honouring the family is not in the Quran, neither is killing in general, and that Islam should protect the rights of all human beings.

Saba forgiving her father and uncle was another thing that truly confused me as to why would you forgive someone who tried to kill you especially a family member who knows you well enough to get to you and possibly try to harm you again, in order to reagin honour. However I do see the reason and that she forgave her father as he was the one looking after her mother and two sisters.

Matt Friedman – Modern Slavery

There were many things said by Matt Friedman that were new to me. There were many interesting statistics mentioned that where truly shocking. The idea that something so old is still being used today, hence the name modern slavery is truly disturbing. The idea that there are more slaves today than in history is not a good sign, since back then countries had not abolished slavery but not slavery occurs in countries such as China who abolished slavery in the early 1900’s, or India who was part of the British Empire at the time when they abolished slavery. One thing I learnt is that anyone can make a change big or small. Being there for that presentation made a change, now everyone who was sitting in the Auditorium has been informed and educated about the matter who can go on and inform others and inspire change.

Human Rights Violation – Slavery

Slavery is an idea said to have been abolished about two centuries ago. However, there is still slavery occurring in powerful countries including Russia, India and China. Countries such as India formerly part of the British Empire, who later abolished slavery in 1833, have about 14.3 million modern slaves. It concerns me that countries these days who agreed that slavery should no longer be continued, have slaves of their own but do nothing to bring an end to it. Slavery is not commonly heard about on the media as there is a lack of reported cases and / or evidence. The idea of something so old and so brutal still being practised today is a reason why I find that this is a very important issue but nonetheless very disturbing yet interesting.

Human Library – Repost

Human Library was a very interesting and enjoyable experience. The stories told by my class mates were very deep and well told, although they were not all about very positive experiences. Some of the stories where not exactly based around themselves but other members of the family which was something I found really entertaining. Hearing stories from classmates was a completely different experience than having a guest speaker who we don’t really know very well talk about their life. I think that the experiences was good for the speakers and the listeners for the reason that by doing so we learn more about other people and how the experiences they had shaped them.

Positive and Negative – Popular Culture

There are indeed positives with popular culture but there also some negatives. Most of the time people are divided. Divided between large things such as politics, religion and race, and sometimes smaller things such as kind of sport is best or what music is good. Popular culture more or less pushes all those differences aside and brings everyone together through comedy or other sources of entertainment. Popular culture can create friend groups and said in the Impact of Pop Culture on Society article that pop culture can convince you to become more positive. Although all the things stated above are positive popular culture can have some negatives. Popular culture mainly affect the younger members of a society which means that the younger members are influenced by messages from famous people such as Jay-Z, messages such as greed, consumption and many more listed in the article We are what we consume. Sometimes popular culture does not always bring people together but can sometimes create social divide and could reduce free thinking.

Popular Culture – Brands

I mostly agree on the top brands that are shown in the graph. I think that most of them are placed up there are just because they are popular and have a lot of good content. That does not necessarily mean that they are cool. Youtube is big because it is mostly videos and these days people watch videos to learn something or for entertainment instead of read which would talk longer. I certainly watch youtube and go on google just because it is easier not because its cool.

My Thoughts on 5 brands:

Youtube: Quick and easy way to search and view source of entertainment and education

Google: Easy search engine for to discover information on anything / everything, but need to sure of source and search criteria.

Playstation: Pure entertainment considered cool to have so you can play with friends.

Xbox: Another source of pure entertainment which would also be considered cool because of the exclusive access to certain games or alternative entertainment.

Mukul Deva

The talk with Mukul Deva was very interesting. He was very entertaining and it sometimes got weird talking about the fact that he doesn’t really care unless he gets paid for it. He talked about how to tell a general story. Here is his formula.

Step 1: Choose the plot

It is possible to wright any genre but thriller is the easiest. You then need to know the story, the incident, protagonist and the antagonist from the vert beginning. The parts that make it a thriller are the actions and romance and you need to add obstacles along the way to hype the story up. Writing mysteries are based on some sort of crime, mainly murders. For a mystery you need 5 or more main characters. The victim, several point of view characters, and suspects.

Step 2: The Setting:

The setting needs a location and time period. There are a lot of difficulties if you are writing from past you need to do research in order to keep things as accurate as possible which can take a while. To write about the future is easier because it hasn’t happened yet. You can go loose with imagination. Making up your own world is also a challenge as everything still has to make sense.

Step 3: Characters

In a murder mystery you need 5-7 characters. 2 main characters, the victim, the criminal and a couple others to confuse the reader. One of the key things that Mr.Deva said was ‘The reader must either love or hate the character.” otherwise the story would just be a drag and boring. You must put yourself in the characters shoes and do research on people to get the writing completely correct about real life people.

Step 4: Events/Incidents

Incidents are a great way to get characters to bond or meet up in the first place. It should also create tension, danger, and desire in order to keep the reader hooked. The more events you have, the more suspects there can be in the mystery and therefore confuse the reader. Incidents add more to the character and make them relatable.  Sometimes it gets hard to fit an event into the story as may seem random.

Danny Raven Tan

“We were created to create”

In Danny Raven Tan, there was a lot of information given about his personal life, such as changing his job, his fight against pancreas cancer, his mother having dementia and then opening his Tiffin Gallery.

Throughout the presentation Mr. Tan talked about how religion shaped who he is today. He believes that religion is to make people better by having wisdom, faith and strength. The things that stood out the most from Mr.Tans presentation was about happiness.  When it was at the start talking about having a job that made him happy. Spreading awareness of dementia and opening his Tiffin Gallery. Mr. Tan even created a short film about the ups and downs living with his mother who had demantia . The short but very deep film had been been nominated in several different festivals and won an award which then lead to comments from around the world.
