The talk with Mukul Deva was very interesting. He was very entertaining and it sometimes got weird talking about the fact that he doesn’t really care unless he gets paid for it. He talked about how to tell a general story. Here is his formula.
Step 1: Choose the plot
It is possible to wright any genre but thriller is the easiest. You then need to know the story, the incident, protagonist and the antagonist from the vert beginning. The parts that make it a thriller are the actions and romance and you need to add obstacles along the way to hype the story up. Writing mysteries are based on some sort of crime, mainly murders. For a mystery you need 5 or more main characters. The victim, several point of view characters, and suspects.
Step 2: The Setting:
The setting needs a location and time period. There are a lot of difficulties if you are writing from past you need to do research in order to keep things as accurate as possible which can take a while. To write about the future is easier because it hasn’t happened yet. You can go loose with imagination. Making up your own world is also a challenge as everything still has to make sense.
Step 3: Characters
In a murder mystery you need 5-7 characters. 2 main characters, the victim, the criminal and a couple others to confuse the reader. One of the key things that Mr.Deva said was ‘The reader must either love or hate the character.” otherwise the story would just be a drag and boring. You must put yourself in the characters shoes and do research on people to get the writing completely correct about real life people.
Step 4: Events/Incidents
Incidents are a great way to get characters to bond or meet up in the first place. It should also create tension, danger, and desire in order to keep the reader hooked. The more events you have, the more suspects there can be in the mystery and therefore confuse the reader. Incidents add more to the character and make them relatable. Sometimes it gets hard to fit an event into the story as may seem random.
