Christoph Niemann

I find Christoph Niemann a very interesting artist because he finds normal everyday objects and integrates them into paintings to create a complete art piece. It is interesting to show how such simple objects such as a sock or a paintbrush can create such interesting art. I also find it interesting how when you just glance at the picture it looks like the object and the painting fits together very well, but as you look at it for a longer time, it starts to look like two very separate things. I find this especially with the toucan piece where the dropper after a closer look looks very out of place compared to blending in with the painting. I think aspiring artists can learn from Niemann’s work to see how you don’t need anything fancy, you can create great art that has meaning to it with things as simple as everyday objects and paint.

The pictures in this post are my favorite four pieces by Niemann.

This Brush Girl piece is probably my favorite because I find that the whole thing flows very well and this is one of the few pieces that I find doesn’t get distorted after looking at it for a while. I think its such a simple piece but that is also the beauty of it. The yellow paint works very nicely with the brush and wooden handle of the brush.

In contrast to the dainty Brush Girl, I feel this piece is a lot more ‘blocky’ in a way especially with the fact that the sock is used for around half of the t-rex’s body whereas the brush was only used as a dress on top of the girl in the last piece. The colours and tones in this piece also work very well together with the sock having a murky green tone in it to match the swampy green colour of the paint.

I also really like this piece because it is something so simple once again but this time with the curling of paper that I’m sure everyone has done at least once in their life. It is something so simple that isn’t really even an object where I’m sure if I had tried to recreate Niemann’s work, that I wouldn’t even think to make art out of. The facial features in this piece also match the way the paper or ‘lips’ are positioned especially with the eyebrows in a questioning manner. I feel like the ‘lips’ also match the eyebrows as they look as though they are unsure about something as if to question it. Once again I feel like the colours go really well together in this piece with the rich maroon red colour and the pearly while notebook.
