A boxers response to racism
In this talk, Mr. Perera a high school teacher gave us an insight on what it’s like to be discriminated against because of the color of your skin. Mr. Perera starts off with setting the scene in a bar where he was approached by several men far more physically built than him who threatened to beat him. Mr. Perera proceeded to analyze the situation and thinking back he decided that he had three options. Back out and probably be beaten up, Fightback and maybe get a good punch in, or make a joke. Mr. Perera proceeded to tell us how he decided to make a joke and how this one joke deescalated the entire situation.

Escaping a burning school
In this talk, we were given a first-hand account of what happened when bushfires in South Africa burned down the majority of a boarding school. we were told how the families were told to evacuate to the nearest mall and how they had to leave all their possessions behind. It is clear there was a constant struggle to save the school and watching their houses and “lives” burn down in front of them had a profound effect on them. Especially they were helpless to prevent it. We were also told how in the aftermath the community came together to rebuild.
