I was exposed to the ‘Economeast’ magazine, even before I joined UWC. I was studying in India, in Grade 7 at the time, and my sister had just joined UWC (grade 8). It was on one of the parent-teacher meets, that my parents, first bought an Economeast magazine. Very impressed with the quality of the work presented, they showed it to me. I was too young to grasp all the concepts being discussed, yet the fact that they spoke about real world issues, made it relevant to me.

My sister, went on to join Economeast the very next year, and has been a part of the club for 4 years now, previously as an editor, and now as the chair. However, I was unable to initially join the club due to scheduling issues. Finally a part of the club, i am very excited to immerse myself completely, and do all it takes, to make Economeast even bigger, and even better. My enthusiasm towards this club, has allowed me to now become the secretary – a very important position where I hand in hand with the chairs and vice-chair to coordinate logistics, taking minutes, sponsorship, editing, marketing and other facets of the club.

The amount of work and dedication that this commitment requires, is unparalleled. This is because the final output of the club each year is bigger and of superior quality. The monetary factor allows me to embrace more responsibility within the club, and learn so much from it. It is also one of the larger clubs in the school, and helps me interact and learn from students in other grades, of different skill levels. Moreover, reading other people’s work is not an opportunity for me to critique or criticise them, rather it will be an effective way for me to be more engaged with world events.

My first article will be on ‘Digital India’. India being a developing country has a large group of people who are still reliant on traditional methods of trade, information seeking etc. This allows corruption to seep in very quickly and prevents existence of perfect information. This is why the increase of digital life is essential in India. I plan to research more, to investigate statistics regarding this issue to gain a better understanding of the concept i will write about.

Economeast allows me the take responsibility and lead others, it allows me to put my writing and researching skills to use, it allows me to improve my knowledge of current world events, and it also helps me further develop my interest in Economics, which i study as an HL subject.

Attached is my first article for the Economeast magazine.
