Japanese girls’ stereotypes:

  • Wearing no pieces of jewellery (piercing, necklace)
  • Not leaning ho to use laptops
  • On their phone at all time outside of class
  • Studying independently – very little discussions
  • Not learning other cultures or knowing how to speak different languages

In what ways does the author offer insights and challenges into contemporary religious and cultural practices?

In both texts from the book “Home Fire” by Kamila Shamsie and the photograph of Muslim woman by Yumni Al Arashi, the author offer insights and challenges into contemporary religious and cultural practices.

From looking at the extract of Home Fire, we can see that the author used cultural beliefs and stereotypes that Muslim culture has to show the status that the characters have in the Muslim religion. The author is trying to convey the message of wrong stereotypes and discriminations that occur in a society that is not true or understood in a different meaning. The action of praying that Anneka takes in this scene is considered a Muslim thing, but the things that happened the night before and her dressing int his situation is not thought to be the right thing. On the other hand, we take the story in this certain way, just because we have the mindset and stereotypes that Muslim culture is a strict culture, which might be believed differently for the people who have the value for that religion.

From looking at the photograph of a Muslim woman, we can see that there are creative techniques used in order to show the representation of Muslim women in society. The photographer uses the techniques to convey the stereotypes of Muslim woman, as well as how the religious women can also be brave and confident about their belief.
