What strengths have you discovered through CAS?

The new skill I have discovered about myself in the process of CAS is leadership. Before, I was not confident with being in the leadposition and in front of a group. But with the activities and services I have done in this process, I have figured out how leadership can be seen in different ways and can be done by the individuals. Now, I am much more confident in leading a group as well as incorporating the skills of organisation and relisience along with it.

How have you maintained your motivation with CAS?

For being a dance showcase leader and a dancer, I am motivated by my other dancers and friends who practice together motivates me. It is stressing when I think about how many more rehearsals we have before the show, but I would like to overcome them step by step and build confidence to be able to perform.

For netball, the club outside of school has kept my motivation as the new season started after the term holiday in Dec-Jan. As the new season started, there was a trial for getting into the elite teams which has helped me to keep exercising as much as I could during the long break. From Season 3, netball will be a season sport at school, and there will be tournaments coming up, which should motivate me more.

For figure skating, it has no season, which means that I have to keep the motivation all year round. It is hard to keep motivating myself when there is a challenging skill coming up. Being with my coach and my friends who are also working towards the challenge to achieve the skills, are the motivation for me.

For chamber string ensemble, since we have a performance coming up at the Esplanade in March, I try to practice myself and as the group as much as we can in the time we have left.

For service, meeting with the partners and seeing them smile during the activities motivate me to continue interacting with them.

How might collaboration have been important to success this term?

In my service, we have been interacting with Intellectual Disability people, working with them to improve their skills on floorball and basketball for the client’s aim in the Special Olympics Singapore 2020.

The group had planned some small activities for each of the sports, but was told by the client that they will be having the specific skill activities planned for us to do with the clients. We did not have much detail on what the Specific Olympics were going to be about and how much skills the clients had.

I and my partner has been working with one of the clients for the past 2 weeks, and have seen some skills that the client already has and what can be improved for them. Our collaboration is important in order to interact and help them reach their goals, by understanding and finding out what is comfortable for them, and how we can keep them on task so that we know that they are able to understand what we are teaching and learn from it.

How do you feel about this?

This is a picture from the netball game I had. I was not too confident in defending, as my height is quite short compared to many other people who play the sport of netball. In this match, we were again a team of adults who had more experience, skill and power compared to us. Even from these disadvantages, I was able to block and defend quite a lot of passes, which had lead to a close game in terms of the score. From this experience, I was able to build confidence in my skill of defence and to keep enjoy playing netball.

Just like this experience, the CAS reflection helps me to see my improvement, overcoming concerns of my self.

Reflection : 13/09/19 – Creativity

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

It is hard for me to stand in a leadership role in front of a group and teach them a new dance. It is because people have different skills on the skill of dancing and memorisation. It is hard to plan how much progress I will be able to make in each of the session. I and my partner as leaders have to be organised so that we will be able to complete the dances on time.

What might you do to improve this?

Being organised and plannings for each session would be important for keeping up with the rehearsal schedule and finishing the task on time. Also, being resilient and flexible is important, as we would need to teach at different pace to people in the group with different ability in dancing.

What aspects of CAS are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to being able to reflect on all the Creativity, Activity and Service sections of my year. This is because I have done all of the requirements before too, but I had not reflected on those learning.

How might you plan your year of CAS in order to maintain balance?

I will be continuing what I have done until last year to this year’s CAS expectations. Creativity will be the Culturama co-leader. Activity will be netball during season 2 and 3, Service will be the Unified Sports games with AMK MINDS, where I will be playing sports with mental disability people.
