Culturama 2020 – Initial Reflection #LO1 #LO2

What is Culturama?

Culturama is a dance show performed annually at UWC East. High school students are given an opportunity to collaborate with new groups of people from different backgrounds and not only learn about their cultures through dance but also develop new dance skills.

This year is technically my 2nd year participating in Culturama, however, it is my first year actually being able to perform. Previously, I had a back injury and had to drop out.

The Audition

As someone who doesn’t really have much of an experience with dance, the audition to me seemed like the most challenging part of the process. As someone who struggles with presenting and performing in front of an audience,  the idea of performing in front of people with the sole purpose to be judged was quite nerve-racking. To help me gain confidence, I practiced the audition dance quite a few times to make sure I don’t mess up.

Due to the current COVID-19 ongoing, safe-distancing measures had to be put in place so all groups had to cut members by half at most. Groups from last year having as many as 30 people in one group have been cut down to a maximum of 15.

Goals for this Activity

  • Gain more confidence in performing
  • Develop my dance skills
  • Develop friendships with new people while strengthening previous ones
