Leaders of Environmental Advocacy and Protection( LEAP) Reflection

Through the LEAP College Service Leadership Role, I have been able to thoroughly demonstrate LO6 through engagement with climate change; a critical issue of global significance. We have been able to consider how to bring about change on a local scale through initiatives such as composting, circular economy models( within the vicinity of the school), lowering waste, Vegetarian Wednesday and notably the carbon offsetting project. Recently, our group collaborated with the committee in the boarding house – after which we reached the consensus that in case our group would like to trial sustainability initiatives, we could first trial it in the boarding house to observe whether a favourable outcome is being met or not.

Whilst working in conjunction with the HS Service Executive committee to revise/ review the Sustainable Enterprise Consultants GC Criteria, we identified significant flaws in their rubrics- notably the lack of specificity i.e. child labour laws differ for different countries where global concerns/NGOs are situated and vulnerable groups is ambiguous and doesn’t reference the particular cultural context. However, despite approaching us for critical feedback, the Sustainable Enterprise Consultants were reluctant to take aboard our feedback as they were fixated in their initial criteria and supporting teachers didn’t pay necessary heed to us, which was very frustrating. We decided to flag this concern with the SEC leader to take further action.
