I went to watch the musical production of Urinetown by Pangdemonium the other night. I had never really heard of it or knew what it was about so the experience was very new to me. First of all, the set was beautiful and very practical. The infrastructure was angled giving it depth and added to the illusion of a bustling city, there was also a box-shaped building which was used in a variety of ways and helped change the scenery. The box-shaped building could change the front parts from nice windows to represent the luxury company to a dirty toilet in a matter of no time, it was also utilised by going up to it and using the roof as a platform. Furthermore, there was a sewer entrance that could also be turned into the office through a desk coming out of it and blocking the sewer entrance. In all, the set was very effective in portraying the ruined dystopian city and also showing the luxury company office in a matter of seconds whilst still being very versatile. I felt as though the choral work in the play was superb, everything was perfectly synchronised and full of energy, the movement and actions were fluid and perfectly on time. Furthermore, some of the characterisations was incredible, since it was a smaller cast they had to play many roles and therefore they had to characterise each character very differently and in a very over the top manner. This helped to differentiate the characters and add elements of comedy. Overall I thought there were very interesting and effective moments throughout the piece which I will definitely be using for my own acting and devising work.
