Today learning about Hemingway’s style of writing and his relationship with Fitzgerald is an eye opener to understand how their styles were both so similar and contrasting. The text, ‘I guess everything reminds you of something’ might have a subtle connection to Hemingway and his son, even though it is not explicitly mentioned. The story follows a father and his amazement of his son’s talents and strengths when he reads a story that he wrote. Even though it sparks a slight memory in the back of his mind, he is nevertheless in awe of the talent being presented. He then brings back the memories of him and his son on the shooting range, and how every year he would develop his son’s strength and skill, making him stand out in a competition full of adult pro’s. But when the father bumps into the text that his son supposedly wrote, he realises the fraud that his son actually is and the moment of realisation hits the father. This story is pointing towards the idea that it is impossible to get through in life and be successful if it isn’t done through hard work, and that the shooting range for the son meant nothing to him and was an illusion created to please the father. It highlights the significance of parent to child relationships and how fathers want to see their son’s strive and be successful honestly and with hard work, and at the end of the story, the father is disgusted at how his son was a fake all this time.
