Cynicism

Characters such as Nick and Daisy seem to embody a much for cynical perspective on their lives and the people that surround them. Nick brings forth a different set of beliefs, values and opinions, therefore his identity influences his views and makes him appear cynical to the reader. Daisy on the other hand was forced into this cynical view on life due to all the negative things that have happened in her life, she tries to force an illusion of happiness and excitement that is in reality masking her grave sadness and frustration at life. She wants to pretend she is living the best life and the people around her believe it, but she does not in reality wish anyone to live her life.

The scene with the white dresses and the women is almost like a painting of them that introduces Nick to the beauty and materialistic visuals of their lives, it focuses on the physical and visual, removing everything else. It paint’s a picture of what most people perceive of the higher classes.

The green light when Nick first meets Gatsby is a representation of something Gatsby wants but cannot have. He is reaching out to this ominous and bizarre cold light that is actually found in front of Daisy’s house. Does he want her? Or does he want what she has? He is seen trembling and desparate for the comfort he believes she will bring him but could that be the mistake he makes?

The valley of ashes in turn represents the lowest of all, it falls at the bottom and serves as a contrast to the high and beautiful life that hides outside of reality. It represents the industrial boom, the force of nature and the new common society. The reality that is seen as disgusting to the higher classes but common to everyone else. The eyes of Dr TJ could represent either god overlooking the world and it’s people or the lens that show what reality is and the main point of return –> the valley of ashes, it could also represent Gatsby’s fear of falling back to the bottom, and loosing everything he has, therefore a possible reason towards why he wants to be with Daisy. Will she bring him the comfort and security he does not have or do the eyes symbolise a future that is awaiting, silent yet terrifying.
