Maths and Me

For maths I associate the subject with the feeling of being anxious, for the reason that I associate the subject with pressure. This is because it takes longer for me to understand topics, thus finding it more difficult. Therefore, I feel nervous about starting this course, as I faced many challenges during IGCSE, however I am also looking forward to learning this new course, as I have gotten the choice between applications and interpretation compared to analysis.

When approaching a new problem I prefer to have someone explain things to me, as I feel it is more beneficial and will help me understand the topic better. Though working things out for myself is important, after a while it is more beneficial to have someone explain the topic to me.However, after the first time, I will want to first try to work things out for myself, using the knowledge learnt from the first time. This way, I will have a better understanding of how to approach the problem in the future.

When encountering a problem, I will review my notes and past questions which are similar to try and solve the question. If I am still stuck, I will then approach the problem in different ways in an attempt to solve it. Finally, if I am not able to solve the problem, I will ask a peer or teacher for help.

My greatest strength in math is that I am persistent, after encountering a problem I will continue to try to solve the problem. Furthermore, I am also organised, I will come to class prepared to learn. However, a weakness for me is that I am not very reflective, therefore I am not confident in which specific areas are weaker for me in math. This will be a problem when setting short and long term goals to improve myself.
