Sleep PSE Well Being

After reading The New York Time’s article on “Do you get enough sleep”, I’ve learned that sleep is something that although we take foregranted, very important and crucial to our proper functioning as a student. It turns out in the article that students who take a 90-minute nap after lunch have a raised learning power and absorb information better. Although this isn’t something that I would likely be able to do in school, I do think it points out the value of sleep and how important it is, especially at this time of school life. Currently, I sleep about 6 hours a night, so I do think that there is plenty of room for improvement with that number, and I should definitely pay more attention to my night-time habits to ensure this number improves, such as avoiding blue-light during night time to ensure my sleep is not disturbed.

I feel like one of my biggest weaknesses with sleep is not the fact that I am physically unable to sleep, but more because of the fact that the 8-hour figure of minimum sleep required has practically set a rule for me. Personally, every day in the weekday, this 8-hour figure always adds extra stress and anxiety for my sleep cycle, as I feel that this 8-hour figure must be met, or I may have a bunch of irrational fears such as not growing any taller. That being said, I obviously realize that these thoughts are totally irrational and ridiculous, but nonetheless have trouble controlling them, making me take melatonin to better sleep on a regular basis. This is something that I have to address, and I think that the best solution to go forward would be to have more rational thoughts about the effects of proper sleep through more research into the science of sleep.
