「#1」— Combined review of Capturing East Service

I am a person who is interested in learning information about all people, as my motivations come from the interest of learning about proletarians in Singapore, as we could get in direct contact with many of them. The primary task for out’s club for the moment is to interview(virtually) the workers around the campus, asking them to share their story (if willing to) with not only us the students but perhaps the parents in the same time. 「LO1」

For the moment being, I am in charge of the translation of works from English to Chinese to get immediate feedback from the workers. Working alongside a mixed grade was the first time for me — many energetic students have the will to see and to understand some people’s world through the means of interviewing them. My role in the current club is rather peculiar, as I am in charge of the translation of articles as well as taking part directly in interviews. However, I do work with Jackson, a G10 student regularly as he has a stack of the interview that has to be translated. In most times, I would be at the place whoever needs me to be.「LO5」

When translating, the choice of word is also important as I, as the translator, want to show no means of discrimination through word — whether unintentional or not. This cause the working time to be prolonged significantly as I am always looking for better replacements, more neutral/praising words. For example, I evade strong words that have a commanding tone. 「LO7」

The COVID 19 pandemic has spread across the world at a rapid speed, and I believe a student of an international school must learn about this idea directly by contacting the people. For the most student who studies in an international school could be regarded as “wealthy”, causing them to overlook the impact this pandemic easily. Therefore that’s why I believe this service is so crucial to the gain of experience through social practice — if not, one would be “not able to tell the five cereals apart.” From the documents I’ve seen so far, the workers are choosing their words very carefully as they share a similar style of response. I used not to be paying this much attention to getting in contact with the proletarians, but not I felt the importance of it as I thought they, although a majority of the society, need much more protection and rights to stand against this pandemic as all the people who we had interview expressed the same job concern.「 LO6」

IN a brief conclusion, I personally believe that I need to work on CHinse grammatical fluency as well as to master the use of adjectives as they are being used very prominently in the English interview script. And the best way of fixing such is through reading books, read many of all sort to master the use of words. 「LO2」
