Learning outcome 3: Lighthouse Motor Skills Service

In our service we have to make a plan for the kids and what activities they will do when they come to see us. Planning the activities is one step but actually performing the activities and setting them up is a harder task. But in our service, we plan to see the kids every week, even if they don’t always turn up. We always have our sessions planned beforehand and have the materials in place ready for the sessions. I have planned 2 sessions with my group including the first session we ever had with the kids at our school. I did this in collaboration with my group of 3 people.

Dinner Party

Winston Churchill

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was a British politician who was prime minister of the U.K in 1940-1945. He lead Britan to victory in World War 2. He was also PM again in 1951-1955. He was one of Britain’s greatest ever strategic minds and his speeches have become legendary, his “We shall fight them on the beaches” speech is the most widely recognized. I want him at my dinner party as he would be a unique perspective as he fought in the military when India was under British Rule as well as commanded an army in World War 2 against the Nazi Empire. He would also have a wide variety of views as in his early career he was a member of the liberal party, before switching to the conservatives for the rest of his time in Parliament.

Adolf Hitler

While I in no way agree with Hitler’s views, it is no doubt that Adolf Hitler is one of, if not the best military strategists to ever live. He was able to rally an entire country into doing something awful and did so without the people’s rebellion against him. He was voted into power and did not take over by force, the way he managed to deceive an entire nation was quite impressive, even if it were for the completely wrong reasons. He is a very strong-willed individual with a strong sense of national pride as he started WW2 as a result of him feeling that the Treaty of Versailles was unfair on Germany, as well as another opinion he had on a certain religious group. It would be interesting to see his views on things and to see him interact with Churchill.

Tommy Shelby (Fictional)

Thomas Shelby is the leader of the Peaky Blinders, a gang from 1920s Birmingham. In the show, they are one of the most feared gangs in the county and any other organization that dares to rival them usually ends up with someone being killed and not on the side of the Blinders. They have taken on both British, American, Russian and Scottish opposition and coming out on top 9/10 times. I would like to have him at my dinner party as he is a very smart and charismatic man who also fought in WW1, and while he was a member of parliament in later seasons he has a distaste for authority and at times can be very violent, of which the foundations of the Peaky Blinders was based on. It would be interesting to see the interaction he has with men like Hilter and Churchill.

Paper 1 Reflection

I thought my paper 1 went quite well. I thought I wrote at a decent standard despite a few spelling mistakes but it has definitely improved from last year, as I have always struggled with my spelling. I needed to relate my ideas more towards the soup and how it is an advertisement rather than just pointing out the issue with it. For next time I just have to keep in mind the purpose of the picture and write more about that, which I feel will push me to that next grade band. I definitely enjoy writing a text like this more than what we have done before.

Lang and Gender

I’ve chosen to look at these two advertisements. The Co-operative advert on the left, which is more recent, and the Alcoa Aluminium advert on the right, which is older. These two ads both discriminate against women and stereotype them quite heavily. The one on the right highlights how women are seen to be weak and it should be amazing that a woman at this time could open a lid. Which also heavily implies that she would be in the kitchen and cooking using this bottle. That also links to the ad on the left where it implies the daughter in the family would be doing all the cooking and washing as she is the woman in the family along with the mother. It is also saying how she should be treated for this, which in turn makes it seem as if it is a job rather than if it is a chore. The slogan be a good egg also shows how that should be morally acceptable and people should be expected to do this. In some countries, women are still made to only stay at home mothers and do the washing and cleaning, it was only recently that females were allowed to attend football matches in Iran. Which shows that even at this point in time this is still a prevalent issue.

LO 6: Lighthouse motor skills service

In my service, Lighthouse Motor Skills, we work with hearing impaired and visually impaired children where we plan activities and games for them to do when they come to our school for a session. This helps contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, sustainable cities and communities as well as good health and well being. We contribute to these as through these activities we try to engage with the kids and plan activities that they are able to do and have fun with, which hopefully will contribute to their wellbeing. Doing this also gives us a good understanding of people who do not have the same privileges as us which creates a sustainable community as the kids get to know us through multiple visits.

I will be comparing these two ads for vegemite and marmite which are essentially Australian and British versions of each other.

In the Vegemite advertisement, the slogan for it is “tastes like Australia” this is in reference to it widely being known as a very Australian thing to eat and something that they like to enjoy quite a lot. The ad also plays on the side that Australians are proud of their country as in the red is says “Tastes like: punching a shark in the face during a surf comp,” this combines the Australian values of them being surfers and also incredibly cool when it comes to things like dangerous animals. Which would cause them to think better about their nation. This is also an event that actually happened during a surf competition, so is like an inside joke between themselves and the people who made the ad. People who are not aware of what the message could be about. It could be lost and go over their head. People from some cultures might view it as animal abuse ad be offended, for example, someone from LA, who are stereotypically quite socially active and considered ‘snowflakes’ might see the use of a shark being hurt to sell a product, when there is no need for a relation, as offensive and something that shouldn’t be allowed. Or so someone from a place where Shark is commonly eaten might assume that the product is some sort of Shark paste.

In the second advert, run in the U.K. They are advertising Marmite, which divides the nation as some people love it and some hate it. Which also appears at the bottom of the photo. They have also coupled it with quite a popular debate at the minute which is Brexit, shown by the “Hard Breakfast”, “Soft Breakfast”, “No Breakfast”. As this topic also divides the nation. Doing this is sure to get the ad publicity as at the moment in the U.K Brexit is the biggest topic on the news. People not from the U.K or not familiar with Brexit are unlikely to know what it is referring to in the photo, as they will also probably not know what Marmite is. The people who don’t understand the culture around Marmite might also see it as the advertising company taking a stance on Brexit rather than acknowledging that they divide people.

Johari Window

The Johari Window I think has had the biggest impact on me so far in PSE. I feel that it made me look at myself in greater depth and allowed me to understand myself better. I like the idea of having separate components that you can put personality into. It was also a great way to learn more about yourself, as you learn more about yourself you can continue to add to the paper allowing you to see the progression over time. The section where you have to write about how others see you is also important as you become more self-aware, as personality traits that you yourself cannot see are pushed to you by others.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I can identify my own strengths and develop areas for growth. In season one I joined the U19A football team, identifying my skills to make the highest level of team. So far we have played in one 7-aside tournament, in which we came 3rd, and played 3 11-aside games. Of which we’ve won 1 lost 2 and drawn 1. I am continuing to develop in preparation for SEASAC selection, which is the highest tier of school football possible. I am able to identify my areas for growth which have allowed me to grow as a player over the early part of this season and will continue to do so over the full course. Reflecting after the games and watching back videos have helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses so that I am self-aware in those aspects. Starting the early games on the bench, I have broken into the starting lineup now as I have managed to identify what areas of my game needed to improve.
