“What We Can Do is Never too Small.” – Lock Hui Min on Really Good Goods

In July 2017, Lock Hui Min  decided to start her own online platform, Really Good Goods, that sells goods that promote social causes from around the world.  It works with two organisations, Café Brisa Serena (CBS) and Bettr Barista Coffee Academy, in hopes to support the Methodist School in  Dili, Timor Leste in their goal to provide education to Timorese children. 100% of profits from Really Good Goods go towards the fund for the building.

In Timor Leste, lots of families depend on the coffee business, but get paid a very low wage by the export companies. These products, such as the coffee cherries, get exported at very low prices to big brands who mark up their prices using these primary products. The gap between the rich and the poor in Timor Leste is huge, with around 80% of the population being illiterate and under the poverty line.

Social enterprises can exist in different models, such as an enterprise that donates profit that is earned, or one that provides jobs. Really Good Goods recently had a brew and taste event, and the turnout wasn’t as much as they hoped. But Fatima, a woman who works in Timor Leste, still got to come out and see another country for the first time and became more motivated in her work. Hui Min says, “What we can do is never too small”, which leads us to the question, what kind of impact can we be creating? Hui Min’s advice: ‘Think big, but start small.’
