Arts Council Arts Showcase Event SWOT Analysis and Reflection

Relevant Learning Outcomes:

LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. Students can articulate the stages from conceiving an idea to executing a plan for a CAS experience or series of CAS experiences.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

Strengths

  • Students and parents were delighted to see the art pieces put up on display, they enjoyed reading the meaning behind the pieces
  • Teachers also really enjoyed seeing the works produced by their students
  • Students and parents were especially delighted to meet some of the art students in person and converse regarding their work
  • Refreshments were served
  • Students were able to work in smaller teams and focus on specific tasks allowing us to work more efficiently.
  • Planning: was efficiently coordinated (in terms of advertising)

Weaknesses

  • Lack of teacher involvement
  • People didn’t show up
  • Not sure what to do
  • Lack of coordination between departments- leading to miscommunication
  • Coordination was last minute – till the very last minute departments dropped out. Perhaps next time set a deadline for departments sooner?
  • Lack of explanation – a lot of people showed up and didn’t know what it was about. Since it didn’t have a set timing, Mr Hickey only gave a speech at the start.
  • Advertising pre-showcase was difficult (poor communication between us and other departments)
  • Setup before the showcase was chaotic (some G12s weren’t done with their displays or there were problems with their work – can we give them a slightly earlier deadline so everything is done by opening night?)

Opportunities

  • Collaborating with film, dance, theatre, music (if we have it earlier in the year)- so that there is involvement with other arts as well
  • Early advertising (getting the word out sooner)
  • Have more students show up next year to talk about their work
  • Give each student more space (it was crammed and not a lot of people were able to view some pieces at once)
  • For the arts council members, at times there was nothing to do( when we didn’t have to guide or advise) students/parents, perhaps we can think of some other ways to engage in the Arts Showcase

Threats

  • Lack of teacher involvement could lead to fewer arts participating in the future.
  • Other events in other departments
  • The layout of the gallery (some art was in the back or by the bathroom so no one saw it), some art in the corridor to other arts classrooms weren’t seen clearly
