Special Olympics Badminton Local Service Initial Reflection #1 (Service)

Service is a critical part of our learning. It promotes giving back to society. This year as part of my CAS, I am doing a local service called ‘Special Olympics Badminton’. Special Olympics badminton is a local service that aims at keeping the special needs kids fit and healthy. As a service, about 12 of us gather together up and do warmups, drills and friendly matches with these special kids. The service session happens once a week on Thursdays from 7-9. In our first session, we did not actually do any badminton, but it was rather a session to know your fellow service members. We were asked three questions and these were what is our name, why we chose this service and what we are looking forward to in this service this year. After doing this, we were more familiar with our fellow service members. Throughout the session, we also talked about the different stages in the service, these included investigations, demonstrations, and actions. Investigation included observing how the badminton is beneficial for the special needs kids. Demonstrations included actually leading the service, coming up with creative drills and warmups as well as providing small tips on better play in badminton. Overall, I think the first session was good as we familiarised ourselves with each other as well as the structure of the service and how it is going to operate throughout the year.
