Focusing on global issues gave me a broader understanding of the text and made me realize that the same global issues apply to many different books/texts. This also made it obvious that even though 1 global issue can be seen in different places, these texts aren’t always going to say the same things about that global issue which is so valuable to gain perspective. Even though sometimes it can be hard to leave close analysis for broader understanding, it made me recognize that both are needed for a deep understanding of any text.

I learned that while writing we always have to ask ourselves ‘which global issue(s) is this text trying to convey and what does the text say about that global issues?’ This helps us focus our writing to go past the close analysis and actually interpret that information beyond the text and the author to see the relevance in the real world. As we place texts under different global issues, we can then come back to that list and see the different perspectives or takes on that issue which can give us more to write about and explore.
