Perspectives on Girl in the River

The perspectives that challenged my thinking were the perspective of the father and sister and the elders in the community. I thought it was quite alarming when the elders wanted Saba to forgive her father and uncle even though they knew that they had tried to kill her. Even though they live in in the same community, and they wish to keep the peace, they did not think that Saba’s attackers deserved to be imprisoned. They did not think of the consequences of Saba forgiving her attackers and how other people could now think that they can get away with doing such crimes.  They also took away her old lawyer who gave her advice to pursue the case further. I also did not think that her father would show no remorse for doing what he did. I thought that since he was her father, he would feel bad for trying to kill his daughter but he said that everything was her fault and said that it was okay because the Quran never said that daughter was allowed to go out with strangers. I also was shocked at what the sister said. Instead of understanding why the sister did what she did, she said that what her father did was right and it seemed like she agreed with what her mother did. And towards the end of the documentary, the father said that because of his actions he is more respected and more honoured in his community. This shows that the community has no or little regard for women and instead of shaming someone for an attempt of murder, like most people, this community applauds it.

I really liked this recipe. In the recipe, instead of using normal butter, I had to use brown butter. The recipe gave instructions on how to make brown butter and it was a lot easier than I thought. All I had to do was put butter in a pan and wait for it to turn slightly brown. After that was done, I added it with sugar, vanilla extract and egg. Then I added the dry ingredients to the mixture. At first, I thought that the mixture was a bit dry but I realised that it was supposed to be like that since they were cookies. Overall, the recipe was quite easy to follow but next time, I need to check more on the cookies as some of the bottoms got a bit burnt.

Ingredients:

  • salt

This dish is usually eaten with another Indian dish called dosa. Making this dish was quite easy and didn’t take a long time. It had a lot fewer steps than what I thought and still tasted good. I would defiantly use this recipe again but next time, I could probably maybe add a bit more salt.

Ingredients:

  • potatoes
  • carrots
  • peas
  • pork mince
  • onions
  • salt
  • pepper

Making this pie was a lot easier than what I thought. First, I had to put all the vegetables in the pan and eventually added the meat. While that was cooking, I peeled potatoes and mashed them. Before looking at the recipe didn’t know that there were only 2 layers which were needed to make the pie. Overall, I think the recipe is quite easy to follow and didn’t have a lot of steps.

 

Skill: Making noodles on 25th of March 2018

Ingredients:

  • carrots
  • noodles
  • soy sauce
  • oyster sauce
  • onions
  • red chilli’s
  • beans

In this recipe, the first step was to cut the vegetables and then put them in a pan. Then, I had to add in the noodles and add the oyster and soy sauce. The recipe was very easy to follow and didn’t take long to make.

This recipe didn’t have any sauce so it was a bit different than the other pasta recipes I had made. I put a bit too much oil when I put the ginger and other spices in which resulted in there being a little more oil than anticipated. I also waited a bit too long to put the pasta in so the ginger became a bit burnt. The same thing happened with the pistachios which were in the oven with breadcrumbs. They got a bit burnt after they were left in the oven for a bit too long. The recipe said to add a fair amount of pepper and salt with the breadcrumbs and pistachios to go in the oven but when combined with the pasta, you couldn’t taste the salt. I also added dried tomatoes to the pasta to make it taste better. Overall, the recipe did not have any sauce with the pasta which caused the pasta to taste a bit plain but to improve it, I could have added more salt.

This recipe only used 5 ingredients and was fast. I used some ingredients that were different to the ones from the recipe as I was told that it would still be the same. Making the macaroni and cheese was a lot easier than expected and only had a few steps to it. Next time, I would need to put more cheese because this time, I didn’t put as much cheese as I didn’t want it to be too cheesy but it ended up being a little too less. Overall, this recipe was really easy and I would definitely use it again.
