The Finklestein Five

The story is about a young African-American man called Emmanuel who struggles with the news of a white man being acquitted of murdering five innocent black children and his journey throughout the process of court case and the aftermath. The main character’s experiences of identity are clear throughout the entire story, he wants to be respected by everyone and wants to not have to worry about his “Blackness”. Emmanuel has a crisis between conforming to the social norms that have been imposed on him so that he can be less “Black” and being his true self. The social and cultural values and attitudes challenges in this story are that it is hard to be a black man in America and truly be yourself. That white people will treat you differently based on the colour of your skin and there is very little you can do to change that, whilst finally showing that black lives have less value than white.

Sports Ethics

During IBDP I’m taking the class sports science which is the first to run this year, this additionally means that there are going to be more experiences related to sports science. One of them that has started running is sports ethics. Although I don’t really know what will happen during this experience I’m excited to start it.

In this experience I want to be able to become more organised and overcome the challenges that will come with a new experience whilst also committing to the process to make sure that the outcome is enjoyable.

Once I’ve finished this experience I want to be able to recognise what I’ve learnt through the two season and have been resilient through the challenges.

Basketball

Throughout most of my schooling I’ve played basketball, and have been on the SEASAC team at my school since grade 9. This has let me grow as a player whilst experiencing highs such as making the team with my friends to recovering from injuries that haltered my playing. Although I have played basketball for so long I still have goals I want to achieve and makes sure that our team is one.

In this experience I not only want to improve my own individual skills but also help the team achieve our goal of becoming better whilst building camaraderie and mentoring the younger students that will play the same position me whilst maintaining motivation throughout the entire experience .

As a result of this experience, I want to be able to grow my role in the team.

Coaching Basketball

Since grade 5 I have played basketball so during CAS I though that I would further challenge myself and transition from a player to assist coaching the younger girls. I did this because not only do I get to work with my coach who has pushed me to be the player today but also help build a greater community for girls basketball with integrating the older and younger girls.

From this experience I not only want to build a relationship with the girls and learn my strengths and weaknesses as a coach and how to overcome them but also being organised and effective in actually working with them whilst having the ability to modify on the spot.

Once I’ve finished this experience I would like to be able to plan and run an entire session with them and identify what needs working on to build my skills as a coach.

AMK Minds – First reflection

As I’ve worked with AMK Minds for the past two years and have built a relationship with not only the clients but also the partners this experience, for me, is about learning how to become more organised as a leader and how to collaborate with not only the new students in the service but also virtually with our clients and help them.

The main challenge for this service will be how to provide the same help we did in person, now online. This will mean that we will not only need to work as a group in the service but also take into considerations the ethics of working with disabled people virtually and if that’s the best route.

When this experience is over I would like to have grown into the role of being part of the leadership in the service and have successfully planned the year and thoughtfully achieved our goals.

Initiative for Peace

I chose to join initiative for peace (IFP) because I have heard about the experience through friends in older grades. The thing that intrigued me the most to join was the way that my friends talked about how they talk about topics of controversy in IFP and that people from different backgrounds, religions and races could all come together and talk through how they felt without judgement. I think that I’ll learn more about other people’s perspectives and how they view the world which is important to do as I believe you should always listen to other people especially when talking about global issues.

With starting a new activity there will be challenges that could arise as in IFP we talk issues that not everyone will agree on that could personally affect people. This will hopefully also give me a chance of learning more about myself and my values

From joining IFP I would like to become more open-minded towards other people and their views and try and understand from different perspectives. Although there is no true way of measuring my improvement of skills I think that there will be a difference in how discussions start versus ending.

What do you wish your teachers and peers knew more about you?

Something that I wish people knew about me is that I’m quite sentimental. Over the years I have moved schools a lot and when you move a lot it was sort of as if I was starting a new life every one-to-two years. As a result of that I have come to cherish the ones around me a lot more than I used to. I think that not many people know this about me because it’s very hard to be outright sentimental but I do tend to appreciate the moments I get with my family and friends more as I get older. I’m also quite sentimental because I have friends who I’ve known since I was 11 or 12 yet I haven’t seen them for four years yet we still talk everyday and I think that this contributes a lot to know that you always have people even if you don’t see them everyday. When I’m older I want to be able to look back at my school years and be happy about the people I surrounded myself with.

Goal setting

As I’m starting my CAS journey I thought about what experiences I’ve done before and how I can further challenge myself. In this document my ideas are shown.
