SWOT Analysis- Climate Change and Clean Energy Season 1-2

SWOT Analysis – Climate Change and Clean Energy Group Jan/Feb 2019

Our Goals:

Learn, Share, Promote, Engage around Climate Change and Clean Energy in our community

Achievements: Detail and links

All: Presentation at the Conscious Festival 2018- Hemal, Nikhil and Vidhi. We offered insights about the Lamdon Project in Ladakh and carbon offset as well as the UWC Solar For East Project.
Carbon Offset + lesson plan Group

Learned about the attributes of a Golden Standard Carbon Offset Project in the context of the Lamdon project( Sustainability Compass Analysis)

Completed the UWC Partner Carbon Offset Criteria slides and form

Created a lesson plan for Middle and High School students

We embedded Geography and Global Perspectives conceptual understandings in the lesson plan; thus making thoughtful links to the syllabuses.

Presentation Group
  • Created a video to be shown to the grade 8s during mentor time, informing them about the situation, what our school is doing to help the situation and also to convince them to take part in the service next year. The video is to be followed up by a google forms survey so that we can see what they have taken away from the video, to consolidate their learning and also an opportunity to understand how to improve the video or any future presentations the Climate Change group might give.
  • Link
  • Most of the grade 8s believed that we can make an impact by minimizing the use of ACs and Lights, more efficient water dispensing systems.
  • One of the suggestions was motion sensor lights.
  • We could perhaps increase the amount the compost or recycling bins. The blue bins could be replaced with three smaller trash cans like in the canteen. We have one set near the staircase but it is too far away for anyone to actively use it.
  • Get rid of canteen TVs
  • Improvements: Better audio quality, more pictures, shorter and more appealing, camera stability, try to keep the subject of the video more in focus in all the shots.
  • The link to the responses
Blogger Group http://portfolios.uwcsea.edu.sg/altiliumenergy/

  • First: We set up our website on Blogger (WordPress), but had to move it to the UWCSEA Portfolios site (link above)
  • Then: We published a total of 7 articles over the 2 terms that we were a part of the blog team. These were categorized into 3 separate collections of topics.
  • We shared our blog to other students (some Gpers and Geography students) and other schools

STRENGTHS

The strengths of our service partnership are:

We are able to discuss ideas thoroughly in light of our shared interest for Climate Change and Clean Energy action

We were able to make goals and execute them or even do better than the goals we set.

We had a variety of skill sets so different jobs within the service could be filled up adequately

WEAKNESSES

Identify them and add strategies to minimise them:

  • Not having key facts to hand or remembering them /lack of key knowledge – need to find a way to remember regularly
  • Students were not always present. A possible way to minimize this is to keep a 3 strike rule, E.G First strike no penance, second email to parents third you are expelled from the service. Unless it was a justifiable reason to not comply by the rules, don’t apply.
  • Lack of awareness about key citrinutions like Veg Wed.
  • Blog team – a more widespread audience for the blog is required, there needs to be a clear system that records viewers/ comments
    • Share the blog in the right timing so that more people would want to read about it (eg. during the environment unit in gpers, energy unit in geography)

OPPORTUNITIES

Further goals for our service next two terms

  • Presenting our lesson plan to teachers, receiving their feedback and eventually implementing the lesson plan.
  • Increase our audience from grade 8 to perhaps the entire middle school
  • Teachers/ other staff asking for better infographics–> series of infographics depicting problems and solutions in the context of our carbon offset project and our current accomplishments. This could also connect to our existing lesson plan project- IB Geography Paper 1 includes analysis of infographics in the context of the current unit of study( e.g. Climate Change).

THREATS

Identify them and additional strategies to overcome them:

All students will not be present as a majority of the students are in grade 10 but have exams so they won’t do a continuation of the service.

As part of the Climate Change and Clean Energy College Service, the activities that I planned began from actually being informed about the issue ourselves through research and our teacher supervisor towards taking action. Our projects comprised of the Carbon Offset Tax, lesson plan, Blog group and Video group. The project which I played the most integral role in was the developing the Carbon Offset Tax project- in which funds from the carbon tax imposed on Grade 9 and 10 UWC trips went towards tree plantation programs in Lamdon, Ladakh. We were looking to develop connections with other UWC partners who could potentially benefit from funds collected and thus involved in the creation of access criteria. (LO3) Some criteria included multistakeholder planning, community needs analysis and projects yielding benefits for multiple SDGs( not solely- 13), which connects to LO6, as I have learnt about attributes of an optimal carbon offset project.  There were difficulties in the execution of our plan to propose these criteria to UWC partners due to language barriers and also lack of the available human resources to help us with fulfilling the criteria where the NGO is situated, so we have managed to present our ideas to others in our school body to get their inputs. ( LO3)

I have looked into the responsibility (ethical) that we have to find solutions to climate change given our impact; I have considered why offsetting could be considered an ethical dilemma (makes us feel less guilty – and could, therefore, increase flights) but why it is needed anyway alongside a reduction in flights. I have considered what makes a genuine offset project  – trust, accountability, participation, responding to needs, etc  (all ‘virtues’ or normative judgements) and not just a technical equation to be solved. I have guided group behaviour through essential agreements – essentially determining the ethical behaviour of the group for fairness and responsibility whilst working as a cohort. ( LO7)
