Are social media rules different from the regular rules of how to engage with friends in person? Why or why not?

The rules of social media can overlap with rules of face-t0-face engagement, for example, it is a practice to not bully people, act decently, gain consent or respect others and their privacy. However, some rules of social media that are exclusive to online use, these could include being more aware of private information you leave online, online ‘friends’, password protection etc.
