Values of Singaporean Culture

Common Behaviours in Singapore:

  • It is very common to see people using their mobile phones at the table and not communication with the people they are dining with
  • Tipping is not common
  • It is typical for food to be brought out when it is ready regardless of whether the other people at the same table have their food

What Values of Singaporean Culture do you think would explain the behaviours listed above?

I think the behaviours can be explain by looking into how, as Singapore is a very industrialised country, Singaporeans tend to value work achievements very highly and a lot of Singaporeans are very work driven and value their income as a form of high reward. This can explain why it is common for tipping to not be common as money that is earned is very valued and not typically shared with others as pressure from parents encourage the value of saving money for the future. Something that may come along with a very work driven population is a more individualistic society as achievements and rewards and kept to themselves, possible explaining how

Initial Reflection

After taking a year and a half off of nor swimming, I have recently decided to restart swimming this year. I grew up swimming at the Hollandse Club ever since I’ve lived in Singapore which started in Grade 4. I was quite good at swimming as I grew up training around 2-3 times a week but I never found it that interesting or enjoyable to do, my main motivation was my parents as they kept me dedicated to the sport as I grew up by making sure I went to my training as often as I physically could, which is a good lesson of perseverance they could teach me at that age. Ever since I’ve restarted swimming I find it a bit easier to stay motivated than when I was younger as I find the exercise more rewarding as I did before as I am more educated on the positive outcomes of exercise. Before I took my break from swimming last year, I swam with a friend which was a good way for motivation for both of us as we both were never too thrilled about training, we would make sure the other showed up so that we could train together as it made it more bearable. I aim to train 3 times a week but especially during IB as the workload is increasing ,I find it more difficult to keep up with my schedule of 3 trainings a week. Another thing that motivates me to go to training is the feeling after of healthy fatigue, I’m generally happier after I do exercise such as swimming due to the neurological effects of exercise, this is another reason of motivation for me as I enjoy that feeling afterwards(LO4). During the past one and a half months, my mother especially has been helping me to stick to this schedule and motivate me, by just making sure that I go and don’t make silly excuses to skip a training. Although my mom is trying to motivate me as much as she can, I never really feel as committed as I used to, finding it harder and harder to tell myself that I should go to training rather than taking a nap for example. Another aspect of swimming I have been struggling with is the planning. As I am now much older and have been part of the team for a long time, I have more responsibilities now, meeting with my coaches and planning sessions, even planning how to teach the younger kids on the weekend. Coming in on Saturdays to teach infants how to swim, where I have to come early to plan with my fellow coaches(LO3).

Initial Reflection

This school year, I joined pre-season touch rugby, I played touch rugby back in grade 8 which was a long time ago so I don’t consider knowing much about the sport as I have forgotten most of the skill I learnt 3 years ago. So learning the new skills has been very exciting and fun for me as I find the sport really enjoyable. Reflecting on the first season of pre-season, the things I found difficult the most was collaborating as it is a very important skill in the sport, which isn’t something I’m familiar with (swimming), so I have had to build on my collaboration skills. This involved putting myself more out there using communication which I’m also not used to doing in sports, during games and such. To do this I had to just try my hardest to be part of the team and to communicate as much as I could during practice games, which is something I still do need to work on as I’m a quiet person by nature but I am getting better on. In the future seasons, I can work on this by setting more goals for myself to be louder and more responsive during practice and games.

There are a lot of new skills I have developed whilst learning touch rugby, specific skills such as throwing and catching, as well as game tactics such as the ‘A-Drive’, and terms like ‘Dummy Half’. Along with lots of skills I still remember from grade 8 and am working on developing and improving. I can measure my improvement on skill such as throwing and catching, as well as my participation by reflecting on myself and getting feedback from my coach(LO2). For me, the physical skills like game tactics were a lot easier to develop and understand whilst I do still need to work on my collaboration and communication. All these skills are very important in touch rugby as they are used during games in order to work best as a team, whilst skills like collaboration and communication can overlap with other aspects of my life, which is feedback I have received a lot as these skills are not my strong suit and I believe that my collaboration in touch rugby as a team is helping me develop these skills further. I can use these skill in future activities for not only other sports but also other projects that involve group work, collaboration, and communication(LO5).

How can we Reduce Conflict using our Knowledge of SIT?

In class we have been looking into Social Identity Theory, a topic we have recently discussed is how we can use our knowledge to unite people who are in a conflict or have just gone through a conflict to help them help one another. It can be simple ideas such as announcing “All Singaporeans….” or even “Everyone who has been effected….” to help the people acknowledge their commonalities and similarities which will encourage them to see each other as equal and to persuade them to help one another instead of just themselves.

Why do our identities sometimes become salient ?

Think of a time that you were very aware of your national or cultural identity. How did that affect your behaviour at the time ?

My views on my nationalities change depending on where I am in the world. Since my mother is Vietnamese and my father is Dutch, I have to opportunity to chose which nationality to tell people I am and that depends on which country I am. For example, if I’m in South East Asia like Cambodia or Indonesia, I choose to say that I am Vietnamese but when I’m in Europe I say that I am Dutch. I think this is because if we are given the option we will more often chose to have more in common with a group(of locals). So, for me my cultural identity depends on the community I am surrounded by, and that effects which side of my cultural identity I chose to adapt in that situation to fit in more.

First Reflection

Minds Tampines supports movement for the intellectually disabled in Singapore. They provide movement activities such as dancing for disabled citizens around the Tampines area and we help to join in with dancing to connect with them too. Minds Tampines also provides help with daily routine and living skills for them, including bathing, dressing, writing, and home living. In our specific service activity, we dance with them to mainstream music to get them moving.

I have not had many previous experiences that are similar to this, I have mainly worked for young children or the elderly, which is why I wanted to try something new as I got accepted into a service I have already done before. As this is a more physical service including dancing, I think I will be good at keeping a positive attitude and trying to raise the spirits of the clients if ever needed to and to keep dancing with them. In the past I have been good at talking to younger children and communicating with them, but as I have never interacted with special needs clients I think I will be a bit rocky at the start as typically I’m not very good at talking to new people which is also something I would like to improve on myself but I’m sure after a while I will get a hang of it. This week we made a trip to the Minds Tampines building and we got to meet the clients and get a feel of how our communication with them would go. There are 2 groups, in the first group that I visited, a lot of the clients are mute by choice(chose not to talk) and I found that it was harder to communicate to those who chose to be mute than those who were more communicative and loud. All clients in the second group were loud and very interactive, commonly asking for our attention and to communicate with us. Interacting with both groups made me realize that I need teach myself how to communicate with the mute clients and pay attention to their body language in order to do so, and also that a need to be able to calm myself down as sometimes with the second group it can get a little overwhelming and makes me anxious as they are extremely loud and hard to control. I think learning this will help me in the future of my service and also in future activities. At first I found it quite awkward to try to dance with the clients especially when they were uncooperative, but over the duration of the session I started to be more comfortable with dancing and trying to lift their spirits even when they clearly didn’t feel like joining in.

First few weeks of Grade 11

Since the start of Grade 11, I have changed one of my subjects(HL Art) to HL Geography, which I am really happy about since I’ve had 4 classes of Geography so far and I am really enjoying it. I am feeling pretty good about Grade 11 so far in most of my subjects, I really enjoy all my HL’s but I am kind of struggling with Ab Initio Spanish as languages are not my forte and I missed an important lesson a week ago. Some of the classes that were pretty uncomfortable to be in an quite awkward to are not starting to be better as people are more open to each other as well so it makes the class more enjoyable. I think that to help me with learning a new language I do need to get tuition so I do have to look into that in order to not fall behind as Ab Initio courses are pretty face paced and I’m already not very good at learning new languages. I have been taking a lot of notes in separate notebooks for all my subjects, mostly my HL’s, to prepare for the future when I need to revise on past topics, so I feel good about my note taking right now.

Animal Ethics Article Reflection

After reading this article, I think that the ethical problem with animal testing are very significant. I have always view animal testing as a negative and cruel thing to do, I feel that since the animals are not informed and do not know what is happening to them it’s not very ethical to test on them. Since a lot of animal testing is done because it is ‘more unethical’ to do on humans, I feel like it’s wrong to put an animals rights below human rights just because we are the ones in charge, I think it is wrong to put the animals below us and to allow ourselves to do whatever we please to them because we feel we are superior to them. Although I do see the advantages to animal testing and how we can expand our knowledge doing this and how we can try things on animals such as rats, that we can’t test on humans, I still feel it is still a bit wrong to do so.

Comparison of 2 Physiologist throughout History

Charles Darwin & Franz Joseph Gall (Phrenology)

Both Darwin and Gall focused on humans and how we work, but the difference between their studies is that while Gall studied about the human brain and the different functions, Darwin studied about human evolution and how we got to where we are and how we(and our brains) function the way we do. Gall is said to introduce the detailed study of Phrenology, which is the study of the human brain(cranium). Phrenology is based on the concept that the brain is an organ of the mind, each area of the brain has a specific and unique function. Darwin, on the other hand, is most famous for his research, development, and proposition of human evolution. His evolution theory has had significant effects on science and the way we now view life. Darwin is also famous for his idea of animal selection, as before him, many naturalists believed were ‘unchanging’ and were designed for only one specific environment.

Darwin and Gall both collected their research in different ways, while Gall decided to study medicine in the University of Stratsburg and focused his time and research into educating himself and studying. Meanwhile Darwin embarked on a 5 year survey voyage around the world, focusing on a more interactive way of researching his study of the different people around the world which lead him to develop his theory of evolution.

First Week

During the first day of IB yesterday, I have gotten a chance to get back into school mode and meet many new people, giving me a bit of insight to the next two years here for IB. During yesterdays assembly, it was highlighted that we now have much more responsibility as ‘white shirts’ as we are now going to be viewed as role models for the grades below. This comes with having to manage and organize our time and work very well, which is something I think I will need to work on.

With the upcoming EE’s, IA’s and CAS, organization and time management will be a very important factor in getting them done on time, and good quality. But overall I am excited and nervous too to start the new year 🙂
