Important Skills I Would Need To Use

In the Forbes Article ‘The Skills You Need To Succeed In 2020’, nearly all the skills listed could be applied into my work week at Yishun Community Hospital.

  • Learning out to learn, make notes, reading

I feel like these are basic skills in a field such as medicine as there is constantly new information that you would need to learn and keep up to date with quickly – the faster you can absorb information and the more you learn about the field, particular patients, the more effective solutions can be.

  • Analysing information, spotting patterns and trends

In a field with a lot of data, graphs and evidence-based approaches like medicine, the skill to understand patterns in data is important to be able to extrapolate information to create hypothesis and make conclusions.

  • Communication and Cultural sensitivity

This is a crucial skill to work in a people-oriented profession like medicine as you should be able to communicate with your team, colleagues, patients and their families appropriately and with respect. Bed-side manner is an important skill for a doctor. Cultural sensitivity is also important to understand the types of people you are working with and will be more easy to work with shared context. The more you know about a communities culture, geography and common illnesses, the more adapted you are to be working there.

  • Technology

In the modern world technology is becoming a larger part of our everyday society. Especially in a field of science, new technology is being developed at quicker rates for accuracy, efficiency and profitability. If you keep up to date and learn how to use new technology, you could have the edge in a field that could be replacing human labour with technology.
