How is social media helping with disasters?

After reading the following articles:

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/04/6-ways-social-media-is-changing-the-world/

https://amp.theguardian.com/media/2018/feb/06/digital-media-can-enhance-family-life-says-lse-study?__twitter_impression=true

doing the idea bracket (8 teams single Elimination) and the discussions.

I have came up with the idea that Social Media can help respond to disasters. How?

For example, Facebook’s Safety Check allows users in disaster zones to mark themselves as safe. This was very important during hurricane Irma and hurricane Harvey. And will be important for disasters in the future. Additionally, ‘digital humanitarians’ can log on online when a disaster occurs to help with technical problems, donate and sign up to volunteer for help. An example some people help is by the #PrayFor____. These digital humanitarians are very important in the world we live in today and can help create connections. Not only does social media help with disasters but with movements.

I think this is quite relevant as many disasters have occurred. Since a lot of people currently in 2018 have social media, they do have the opportunity to help others and cause change.

I thought this picture ultimately sums up today’s reflection. As everything discussed was practically connected with supporting others and making connections.

  1. I think this question will defiantly be relevant 3 years from now, I say this because with climate change and extremest groups the amount of disasters are increasing and people need to be able to help from the other side of the world with what you said about the donations and spreading awareness.
In order to consider a wide range of perspectives related to your question, I would have to think about these three things:
    1) Who actually uses social media to to spread these things? Currently a lot of people do with the hashtags and the profile pics but who will in the future?
    2) Who is it that needs to know about these disasters and cant they just come from the traditional news organisations?
    3) What do the people who are effected by these disasters, awareness of their situation, or help?

  2. 1.) I think this question will be relevant 3 years from now, I say this because there will pretty much always be disasters like natural disasters or shooting and also social media will always be there so I feel that this question will be relevant 3 years from now.

2.) In order to consider a wide range of perspectives related to your question, I would have to think about these three things: How does social media help respond to natural disasters, why is it efficient and how can we make it better. With these 3 points you can really understand.

    • Social media can help with social media by posting photos and alerting others.

  3. I think this question will be relevant in 3 years from now because as our generation becomes more technology-based and we start to rely more on media and the internet for information, we will be increasingly focused on social media. Hence, using social media to advertise responding techniques is something that people are doing more often, and this will continue to happen in years to come.
In order to see a range of perspectives related to your question I would have to think of the people who do not have social media and people who are trying to prevent things from being spread on media because then you will be able to see the perspective that social media may be harming some aspects of our lives rather than helping.

  4. I think this question will be relevant 3 years from now, I say this because many more disasters are to come and more and more people will realize that they happened through social media and it will become more important that people learn about tragedies

In order to consider a wide range of perspectives related to your question, I would have to think about these three things: How are these #prayfor movements helping? would peoples first reaction be to go and check social media to say that they’re safe? how far could these safety measures online develop?
