Reason and Emotion

Reason and Emotion

Write about 300 words.

  • How do you think you use them?
  • What kind of balance is there in how you use these contrasting WOK?
  • Can you think of any examples where you relied on both emotion and reason to ‘know’ something or decide on something?

Most of the time, my decision-making process contains two parts: I use emotions to decide what exactly do I want to achieve, and then use reasoning to think how am I going to most effectively achieve it. For example, when I choose subjects for IB last year, I used both my reasoning and emotion, went through a lot to finally make the decision. For choosing 1 subject in humanities, my possible choices are psychology, geography, business, and economics. For other subjects I just don’t even want to think about it, so that’s the emotion part. For this 4, I used reasoning: created a decision matrix; criteria are interest, my ability, future perspective. I remember business got the highest score so I chose business management despite that a lot of people were telling me that business is useless and more work compared to economics. Another decision is much harder: I need to choose 2 from biology, chemistry, and visual arts. Mr. Stirrat recommends me to use a method which is to record in a bar chart every day for what I intuitively want to choose. Then over 2 weeks, I can know which option got more points. I thought this idea is really interesting, but I didn’t use this method, because I do not trust my intuition at all. By reasoning, I should choose bio-chem. I’m not going to explain it in detail, but it’s just a better fit, better for my future, better for my score, and I like it too. However, when I went to tell my decision to Mr. Scott, it’s very difficult to say it out, and I felt really sad and meaningless for the following few days. And I changed chemistry back to visual art. My emotion is strong enough for me to ignore my reasoning in this situation. So I am the kind of person who would reason out everything but just decide on emotion. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I feel lucky that I am able to follow my heart.

Sustainability Project Second Reflection

The best part of the project is when we come together and discuss the next step (happened many times). It’s good to have a group. During this project, I have learned about sustainability in four areas: domestic trash recycling, pets, sustainability projects, and flights. I also learned how to create a web page that is effective and attractive; technical skills with divi-builder and canvas. This project also forced me to do work on time, because there’s no way to stretch the deadline and it is a group project. The most challenging thing for me was to research for the information that’s detailed enough so our client can actually follow. Separating relevant and irrelevant information is also challenging. I had to be creative when trying to organize scattered information together and form a clear focus. Also when creating the infographic. In my team, I was the most artistic. Because I did the video background title, the logo, and the infographics.

Sustainability Project First Reflection

We were really worried when we first got Ms. Cole’s information. Because she is really sustainable, she is already doing everything we could think of. She’s already vegetarian, avoiding air-con, going to sell her car. So we have to go to the next step and be more professional. We started to research online broadly, to find out which areas have more potential. We found interesting info about flights, pets. For the interview, we also noticed that she has not been aware of these two areas. So we decide flights and pets to be our main area of suggestion. She also told us that she is worried about when she put the trash into recycling bins, did those trash actually being recycled. Also, she wants us to help her find some sustainable energy supplier. We decide to divide our work by researching in different areas. I chose pets and trash.

Science unit reflection

In class…Try to explain my ideas in English, practice explaining things.

Don’t be lazy on reading those websites about what we are currently learning in science. In terms of exam, now my problem is that I only write about one aspect on those questions requiring detailed explanation, then I lose one mark here and there. It’s only possible to give a comprehensive answer if I have seen enough examples. I need to train my mind to think science topic in a more overall sense and at the same point more brief to the point. If I used absorblearning.com better when we were studying enzymes, I will do better. It’s not about review before test, but laying a firmer understanding every step I go.

I think it’s good to record down some of my interests and explorations in science. Sometimes I look randomly online and find interesting stuff about science. But I read it and forget it and loose sight of it. I think I should somehow keep a record of those. It might also help when I need to choose specific category of science in grade 11.

How Well Do You Sleep?

I read this article, which wrote about the strong relationship between sleep pattern and mental health. It is surprising to know that jet lag can actually get people into mania and depression. A healthy sleep schedule can give you a good mood.

Should more medical practitioners use light therapy to fix mood disorders?

I’m not sure what is light therapy, but to fix mood disorders, you have to make people sleep well. Which means get into sleep quickly and at the right time, and wake up and get sunlight at the right time. To do that, the artificial light should be blocked through night, but sunlight needs to get in at the morning, which is quite challenging. The sleep schedule should be fixed everyday at the right time(10:30-6:30). It is true for me that when I don’t get enough sleep in a particular day, I wake up and get angry or sad for no reason at all. Also I had difficulty go to sleep if the artificial light is not fully blocked. But I personally don’t feel the effect of sunlight, because if it is raining and the sky is dark in the morning, I don’t feel any difference.

I would say the mood issues can all be fixed if the person can sleep well.

— Dr. Friedman supposes that the reasons more depressed patients don’t receive chronotherapy are that it isn’t taught in medical school, and that sleep deprivation or light can’t be patented so there is little financial incentive to invest in this treatment or research. Do you agree? Why or why not?

My answer: I don’t think so. I think the chronotherapy is not yet being add to the medication is just because there haven’t been anyone bothered enough to add that new system or method to carry out the chronotherapy. Because there could be a lot of difficulty in establish a new thing. So I think if someone figured out how to do it, then of cause he can get patent in someway. Or maybe someone in the world already did but failed or failed to spread. Not everything have to be taught in school, it can also be taught in the working place.

— Should more medical schools teach chronobiology? Should more medical practitioners use natural methods to adjust sleep and mood disturbances? Why or why not?

Yes, of cause. Chronobiology sounds so useful, so why not. I prefer a natural method to cure people, because we should not be too relied on chemical products. We should rely on our own body. That’s kind of what all Chinese thinks. We are part of the nature so we should stay natural.
