I developed my research question on the causes of antibiotic resistance in humans, specifically livestock to shed more light on this unpopular topic and due to its importance as a global issue which is influenced by biological and economical factors together. Consequently, I wished to make it a World Studies essay due to this and to show the different approaches taken towards it in Namibia and India. However, while both Biology and Economics were extremely relevant in my investigation, there was no clear bridge between the subjects in terms of data. Reliable data regarding meat exports to specific countries was also not available due to inconsistency in measuring units and confidentiality. With suggestions from my supervisor, I decided to make my investigation purely Biology and study the effect of consumption of antibiotics by livestock on antibiotic resistance in humans. This has allowed me to focus solely on the contribution, impact of antibiotic use for growth promotion in livestock on antibiotic resistance rates.
