Moving towards the end of the year, we decided to conduct more Christmas themed activities as the center suggested that we involve the elderly in Christmas arts and crafts, caroling, and putting up the annual Christmas tree. During the weeks following up to Christmas break, we brought Christmas-themed coloring sheets for the elderly and found that they were quite interested in the activity, and also gave them the opportunity to take frame their pieces of work up at the center.

In the following session, we brought guitars, shakers, and tambourines to perform a few songs for the elderly. Overall, we really liked this idea as it included all the members of our service, with some members taking charge of the microphone, and others simply singing along whilst playing various instruments. This highlighted one of the interesting aspects of our service, being that we are often given the freedom and creativity to take part in a range of activities according to our overall group interests and consensus.

For the last session, we spent our time piecing together and decorating a Christmas tree at the center. This allowed us to work collaboratively with each other as we demonstrated skills of verbal communication. This was one of the instances where I really felt as though we came together as both students and teachers to work towards a similar goal that would benefit the center’s community.
