How do the narrative and technical elements such as camera shots, angles, editing, and sound combine to establish the theme of the bias and evoke a response from the audience?

This image that was taken from the P&G advert ‘The Talk’ depicts a close-up shot of a young African-American girl looking out of a car window with an anxious, nervous expression on her face. The combination of the close-up shot and narration in the background establishes the theme of racial segregation that often exists within society and draws the audience’s attention towards the subject of discrimination, being the young girl. As the mother of the girl narrates the scene, she says ‘Remember, you can do anything they can. The difference is you have to work twice as hard and be twice as smart’. This sheds light on the idea of racial discrimination as the girl looks out of the car to a group of girls who are all of a different race to her. With the mother’s words being echoed in the background, the audience becomes aware of the bias that the girl is already aware of at such a young age, as though her thoughts are already being implicitly recognized. While the use of side angle gives the audience an intimate view into the thoughts and expressions of the young girl as she remains fearful of how society may perceive her based on her skin color. Not to mention, the editing of the frame drags the shot out and almost makes it look as if it is in slow motion, as the audience recognises the significance of the moment through it’s powerful impact.
