IFP Reflection #3

# LO 3

  • Initiative For Peace has always been one of the creativities/activities that I liked from the beginning. It has helped me to understand conflict and how it can be solved easily in my day to day lives in the boarding house and at school.  Through the sessions, I have come to understand how one can easily avoid conflict when it is right in front of them or take part in the conflict and try to solve it together. In addition to that, I have learned the importance of collaboration, communication, attitude, compassion, empathy and action. And using that,  how to initiate a small conference that can help others’ understand the meaning of peace and importance of reducing conflicts in our day to day lives. Also after watching some videos about judgement, forgiving and world conflict, I have come to realise that forgiving is one of the ways to bring peace but it is also one of the hardest thing an individual can do. Therefore, I have also started practising forgiving and empathy. On the other hand, judging a person without knowing their reason is like defining who you are by judging them. Thus, we should never judge a person without knowing them.
  • One of the sessions that brought a strong effect on myself  was coming up with ideas in groups to lead a small conference with the grade 5s. Though my group was not chosen, the chosen group’s idea was amazing and I think it was an effective way to easily convey the message to the grade 5s. This group work collaborating with the grade 5s made me realise how one can perceive the definition of peace even though they know the situation around them. And this is due to their greed of wanting more and keeping the happiness only within themselves which is being selfish. However, some of them have shown the empathy towards the poor group and they even debated against the group with money about being equal and showing empathy, thus, it is one of the ways of establishing peace. I have learned a lot from them and I also think that they have learned more from the session that we have conducted with them. I hope to learn more so that I can lead conferences in the future.

Service Reflection #2

# LO 4

  • After the October break, we started to meet our clients and immediately started with our sessions. It was really nice to see them but we did not have proper information like their requirements and taking necessary steps before meeting them. We were not fully prepared but the organisers helped us to kick off with the first sessions. It could have been better if our service team had taken some actions like investigating the organization and looking into what the clients need; or actions that need to be taken by us to help clients improve/overcome their weaknesses. In the beginning I felt a little awkward and uncomfortable while interacting with them and it was quite hard to explain and teach them as well, nevertheless, as we started to see them often, we became close to them. Especially, I really  felt close with Singhan who is my client because I was able to interact with and understand him quite well due to our effective sessions.
  • Even though they knew about the sessions, we taught them how to dribble floor balls and taking the ball over or across the obstacles and then shoot. Singhan was already good at it but I think he improved over the sessions. I saw how he was trying so hard to implement what I told him to do over and over again but i understand that they are going to take more time to process in their brain so I always remind him on what he has to improve by showing how to do it. I think showing them and sometimes having physical contact like holding their hands to show how it is done properly  is one of the best ways to build a relationship so that they don’t think that we are strangers whenever they see us but instead a close friend who they can learn from. I know that everything takes time for them, including how they are going to think about us but I think it’s a matter of how we interact with them.
  • We haven’t been able to do all the sessions and yet we have  more to learn from them and at the same time teach them. For me, i have been facing a little problem with understanding with their nature and I am still working on it so I hope through the upcoming sessions, I can build a capacity to learn more about them.

Tennis #2

# LO 2

– Tennis has been one of my favourite activities ever since I joined UWCSEA. Whenever I feel down, I like playing tennis because it somehow helps me to relieve my stress and have fun or sometimes get the satisfaction. After the October break, I started to work hard and I always tried to improve my weaknesses but it’s hard to change my habit within that short period of time since I played with that same habit for several years, however, I am still working on it so I hope to change my weaknesses  soon.

– On the other hand, playing matches with different international schools has been a little challenging for me. I haven’t played any proper match in the past 7 months and now after joining UWCSEA and playing matches with other international or local school gave me little pressure as well. I felt really nervous before or even while playing matches because it was something new for me after I came here. It was quite taxing and I pressured myself  because my motive was to win all the matches, thus, I won 3 matches out of 4. However, after playing several matches I realised and learned that it is not necessary to win but how you play the match and use of techniques and tactics is important and somehow that may eventually lead to winning a match/tournament. In the process, I think I have improved my serving and consistency, nevertheless, I hope to improve more on these areas and my other weaknesses.

Basketball Reflection

# LO 5

Basketball has been one of the greatest physical education for me because I got to improve my overall basketball skills, at the same time, it helped me to maintain my physical strengths which eventually helped me to do well in other sports. I wasn’t able to keep in touch with my basketball training in the past few months and I felt like I have lost my rhythm in basketball, thus, this made me worry a lot so I decided to joined pre-season basketball so that I can catch up my rhythms and learn new skills. At first, I assumed that since it is a pre-season activity, the players won’t be that tough, at the same time I assumed that there won’t be much players. However, my assumptions made me challenge myself and also when I was put in team B, I had to reflect on myself a lot. Seeing how the team A were trained and by watching their performances made me work more harder and improve my weakness in team B. I always worried about whether I will be able to do well or not, whether I will be able to follow up the feedbacks given by the coach or if I can improve my weakness and make it as my strength.

I feel that my weakness is not being able to follow up the feedbacks properly but I also feel that I am improving in that field with the help of our Coaches and my friends. In addition to that, I have also gained the skills of teamwork, shooting styles, verbal communication while playing matches (have never given importance to verbal communication that much before so now I know how effective it is to use verbal communication while playing matches.) nevertheless, it was worth sacrificing my every Friday morning sleep.

Ever since I joined the per-season basketball training, I always wanted to play mix match with the team A because I wanted to see how it feels to put all the skills that i have learnt till now and play with the players who were better than me. In that way I could tell myself whether I have improved or not. And finally during our last training, we got to play mix match with the team A. I was so excited at that moment and did my best while playing the game. I put in all the skills that I have learnt so far during the training and it made me perform well during the match however, I might have failed in some areas that I didn’t notice but I take both success and failure in a balanced manner. I think it is the best opportunity for me to keep moving forward, learn new skills and improve on my weaknesses.

Service Reflection #1

Unified sports games with AMK MINDS.

It has been only 3 weeks since I have joined the service session and it’s already changing my perspectives. The session always excites me of what I will be learning new in the next session. During the first 2 sessions, we learnt about the 5 ways of learning ( reflection, preparation, action, demonstration and investigation) and it helped me to think diversely and collaborate with the other new members in the service. It also help me to think about the ways of how I can help the mentally disabled people and how to interact with them in an effective way. In addition to that, meeting some of the people from AMK MINDS organization last week was really engaging. A small session with them helped us answer the questions we had in our minds and it personally helped me to  get more ideas on AMK MINDS and how we can approach to the intellectually  disabled people and help them. I look forward to learn more and have positive engagement during the upcoming sessions.

Initiative For Peace Reflection

How can Jah and Kay help you as peace builder?

In the stimulation, I was Kay; a rich country with all developed technologies and wealthy citizens. We wanted to help the poor countries like Jah who just got independent and free after being ruled by powerful countries. The Jah and Kay situation implies to many people in this world and it helped me realise how important it is to have  good communication and understanding skills between each other because without having good communication between two parties, it can can never lead to peace building. Even though if we are really rich and want to offer our help to the other person, we should not brag and make it so obvious that we are so powerful. What we should do is to step down and try to connect with them and gain trust from them in order to achieve a goal. When two groups understand each other, are on the same level and collaborate together, challenges will overcome and it is so much easier to get things done that satisfy both groups. We should always be open-minded and listen to the perspectives of the other people before doing anything. That is one of the ways to build peace.

Tennis Reflection #1

#LO 1

Tennis is one of the activities that I have signed up for CAS. It is not just an activity but my childhood memory and my favourite sport. I have been playing tennis for almost 6 years in my hometown (Bhutan) and I still want to continue the sport here as well because there are always weaknesses that I need to improve on and at the same time strength as well. I feel that this is the greatest opportunities that I can ever get to work on it. It’s been only few weeks since the pre-season training has started and I feel that I am improving on my weaknesses little by little. Since the first week of the training, I have been working on my serve and backhand with the help of our coach. I feel that I have improved my backhand little bit compared to how I used to play before. Now, I am aware of how do a proper swing and body postures. Though I still make silly mistakes most of the time, I think it’s the best way of reminding myself and woking on it again. In addition to that, my Coach has helped me a lot on changing the wrong style of serving till now and  I feel that now my serving especially kick serve and second serve which is more of curving  are improving. I can feel the differences of changing the wrong style and I hope to work on it more and be a good player in the future. However, the hot and humid weather in Singapore is still challenging for me. I come from a country with moderate temperature weather and I find it little hard to play sports in very hot place like Singapore, nevertheless I hope to get adjusted soon with the hot weather.

Peace Day Conference (IFP.)

On 1st September 2019,  the Peace Day Conference was held at UWCSEA-Dover Campus from 9 am to 4:30pm. The conference was  held for grade 11 students who are interested in joining IFP in both Dover and East. At first, I thought it would just be a  usual conference to introduce and talk a little bit about how it was formed and what they have been doing till now but this conference was totally different. There were so many activities and games which helped us to have interactions with the Dover students and at the same time it was knowledgable. The Peace Day Conference was divided into four main activities and they were; Sculpture garden activity, tolerance, a model UWCSEA student and the school’s veggie Wednesday . All the activities made me reflect on myself, especially “tolerance”

In the tolerance activity, we discussed on what is meant by tolerance and acceptance and how one should have the ability to tolerate in different situation. This activity made me reflect on what I have been doing and what I should do from now onwards. it made me think deeper about how it can affect the other person if I did not tolerate .Tolerance is the ability and willingness to control your emotions (anger)  and understand the existence of opinions and behaviour that one dislike or disagree. We should have empathy for that particular person. Sometimes there are situations where you have to consider other people’s point of view which can be totally different form yours but you need to  tolerate that and let it be or accept it. That can also come under compassion and in that way even if it was a small thing, it can make a big change in the future. I also learnt that having patience is one of the best ways to calm the situation or conflict and find our own peace.
